2 stroke story

My son Matt wanted to try a 250 2 stroke last fall. A friend let him borrow one for a few weeks and he wasa hooked. We sold his 250F and got him a 2012 YZ250 2 stroke the day we left for Mini Os. He rode it at Mini Os and had some top 15s in the B classes and made the decision he was going to ride it in the 2012 season. Matt has practiced, raced and ridden this bike 4 or 5 days a week since Christmas. We went to the Spring Nationals at Oak Hill and Mill Creek with one bike, the YZ 250. Six practices and 27 motos later he had 7 top 10 finishes including a 2nd, two 4ths, a 6th, a 7th, a 9th and a 10th. Lot of work, but it can be done!

Good work Matt! Are those pic's of the stock class? Just wondering if he always ran the OEM pipe. If so, even more impressive. I can smell the pre-mix from Seattle. Bbbbrrraaappppp!

Bring him up to Canda this summer. He can ride it in the Pro 250f class at the Nationals.

Great story dad. Love how you let your son make his own decision.

Congrats on the results. Sounds like the bike has a bunch of hours on it, how has the maintenance been?

As most of you know it is very difficult to compete at the top level of amateur racing. The 4 stroke mods at that level are pretty high dollar. I am fortunate to have a kid that rides pretty well (not great but very good) and thw two stroke is our only way to compete at that level on somewhat even footing. Matt felt the bike was an advantage over the 250Fs in mosty motos. When it was hard and slick, or wet and greasy the bike is a handfull. He also rode it in 450B and the uphill start was a challenge but other than that the bike competed pretty well against the 450s.

awesome, more 250 smokers will be around in the future due to 4-strokes being super expensive!

id get a set of pipes and a reed cage for local races..

He ran the bike in 250 and 450B Stock and Mod. I ran the stock pipe all of both weeks. I run FMF for all the local stuff.

Just curious if you guys tried a flywheel weight to get less wheel spin when conditions warranted. Also, from what i'ved heard, one of the FMF pipes, either the fatty or sst makes the 250 more 4-stroke like in power delivery which might also make easier to ride on the tracks.

SlowOldGuy, I guess because of your stories on here I have started looking for Matt's name when scrolling through results. I even followed a couple of motos at Oak Hill through live timing and scoring and was pulling for him. It looks like he had a really strong showing this Spring, congrats!

Mike, great to see that Matt is doing so well. He's always been a solid rider with excellent skills. Allen switched to a yz250 last year as well. Loves it and we have no intention of switching in the foreseeable future. Best bang for the buck! Especially when it comes time to do a topend!
