Having narrowed my choice of a new bike down to a 350, is there any real reason to choose a '19 over a still new '18? Reading the info the only item that has me thinking is the pankl transmission. Does it really make a difference? Anything else? They are all faster than I am so not concerned about that. More just about quality, reliability, and comfort.

There has been a switch to the diaphragm spring clutch. I really like the feel of it over the coil spring clutch. It also gets the new chassis.

I've heard generally positive reviews of the new chassis, but not universal. Some have suggested they preferred the 18. I do prefer the orange and white frames of the 18s! Looks matter! ...to a point.

Good catch on the clutch.

A quick scan of Cycle Trader shows dealers asking as low as $8k for 18 SXFs while 19s remain $9700. That's the listed price of course. Those 18s aren't gaining any value sitting there so I could probably offer even a bit less.

For that savings I could get an extra set of wheels and tires or slip-on and other goodies.

I picked up at new 2018 last weekend. In my opinion it was not worth the extra couple grand for a 19. The 19 is an all new year and personally I am not a fan of getting a new model year, they will have some items that still need to be worked out.

The 18 is a great bike, turns great and the power is amazing. Side note - if you plan to finance they have low rates currently on 18 models.

Take a look at MXA's 350 SXF test...they felt the 19 was heads and shoulders a better bike than the 18.

So I've been in the market for a 350SXF the last few months coming off a 2016 KTM 205SXF.

The 2019 has:
New frame with new flex characteristics
Narrower and lower radiators
Narrower shrouds
New tranny
New clutch
I believe the rear side panels are narrower as well.

I'd say if price is a big deal to you and 18 is a smoking deal, then get it. But I wouldn't get an 18 over the frame color if you can afford a 2019.

All valid, but what does it add up to? I doubt the radiators make a meaningful difference. Is the frame actually better, for a 50 yo slow dude? Is the tranny better? Was there an issue with the 18 tranny? I like the idea of the Pankl. The clutch I get.

Wish I could ride them.

If the money difference is substantial id be on an 18 with a full exhaust and suspension work or maybe even conevalves.

If its a few hundred id get the 19. Over a 1000 different id be on the 18.

Bingo. I'm an ever slower 55 yr old and I have a 2018 FC350 and love, love, love it. For the 2K don't do it IMHO. for the 2018 the price has already helped you with depreciation.

How long are you keeping this bike?? 1000-1500 is nothing over 3 years. I would go 19 without question.

I can look at it two ways; use the $1600 difference (list) by getting the 18 to add quite a few goodies, or get the 19 and perhaps over a couple years the presumably lower depreciation will make up for some, or all, of the $1600. I don’t know how depreciation will play out but it seems plausible.

Leaning towards an 18 with a set of backup wheels or a host of other goodies like some orange Neken clamps, FMF slip-on, seat cover, bars, etc. Haven’t ridden the AERs, but if I don’t like them I’ll look into some mods. Factory Connection has done great work for me before.

Can the 19 clutch go in the 18?

The frame is a big deal, if you count the number of frame failures on the 16/17/18 models.

I had a 17 350 and loved it, never had a frame problem, sold it w 20 hours.

I have a 17 250 sxf and love it, never had a frame problem and it also has low hours.

That being said, I bought a take off 17 frame and am getting it gusseted because I have read about enough KTM frame failures that it makes me worried.

You don't have to be fast for the frame to fail, keep that in mind in your decision making process.

Some of the 18 frames are already beefed up from the factory. Easy to spot if you look at the steering head.

This is someone elses photo from the forum, but you can see at the left end the gusset extends out to the center of the steering tube. On the older bikes it didn't go out that far. The 19s look similar in that area.

Have you got any info on these frame failures? I haven't seen any.

All changes do make a difference. I rode the 19 and the tranny is crazy smooth. Shifts easier then my polished tranny on my 250SXF If you are questioning if those major changes effect the bike then maybe you aren’t very picky. That’s totally fine.

If you get an 18, with the money you save, the biggest upgrade I’d say would be to convert the forks to KYB, buy KYB or Cone valves.

Is there a Dyno chart of the 19 anywhere? Im coming of a 18 fc450 and looking to buy a 19 350. I know they need to be revved but I'm thinking after a vortex with an aftermarket exhaust. They could be rode in the mid even low Rpm range?
I find i don't need all the power of a 450 especially when the track gets super rough. Its alot easier to ride a 350 in those conditions. Ive rode a stock 17 350 before.

I rode the 19 450 and 350. It’s got a lot of power compared to a 250 but different then the 450, if that makes sense.
On a 450 I felt like I wanted to tame the power and never wanted to give it WFO and the 350 you will want to try and max the power. I 100% belive you can ride the 350 to its full potential. it’s got more bottom then a 250 but not what a 450 has.

I’m sure you’d be happy, but might be worth a test ride?

I was in the same situation as the OP a few weeks ago. My choice was a $9,500 (plus fees) ‘19, an $8k otd ‘18, or a used ‘18 for $6,500. I ultimately chose the leftover ‘18 for $8k.

My reasons were as follows:

I’m just a 40+ vet rider. At my ability level, I sincerely doubt I’d notice the chassis difference and probably not notice the 2lb decrease in overall weight.

With the $2k saved, I can buy a Guts or Think seat, and exhaust, and be at the weight of the ‘19 and be on a chassis I’m already familiar with and like a lot, as I have a 17.5 250 and 450 already.

Orange frame. To me, that matters. If I can’t be fast, I want to look good going slow.

I was able to swap the Rekluse from my 250 to the 350. That saved me $900 right off the bat.

I had the 17 and now the 19. To me the 19 corners amazing. The bike stays so level when chopping the throttle and braking coming into the corners. Out of the corners the rear stays squatted and is very predictable (you can pin it even when the corner blows out and your still driving foward with out any upset of the cassis). I never could get my 17 handle like the 19. It’s not like the 17 handled bad, It’s just that you didn’t think it could be any better until you ride something better. Im a vet guy and need a bike that gives me the confedince to do what I know I can do, that alone is worth the extra money. In the air it feels lighter than the 17 when throwing it around. The clutch pull is much easier. I will say that it doesn’t feel as fast as my 17 (with some mods) but when I look at the lap times I’m actually faster on the 19. The radiator guards are more comfortable than the 17 as well. Both bikes are amazing but the 19 is by far a better bike.

So sick of this bullshit. “If you count the number of frame failures” Same pictures floating around over and over and over. SMH. Count them as a percent of bikes sold. Knowing NOTHING about the history of the bike. I was sent pics of a new KX and new Yam frame cracks, but I don’t post and don’t perpetuate garbage because I know these are isolated and if they weren’t there would be a recall.
You are obviously susceptible to propaganda and complicit in its spread. Good job.
BTW 120 hrs on a ‘16 450, and I’m not easy on it.

This guy knows what he's talking about!
My impression was an overall less wallowy feel when deceling and braking. Better cornering. Also on the older chassis I’m chasing front end grip on flat corners mid to exit. Only trade off was yes more rigid feel overall, but I like the direction they went.
My 2 cents is if you are a racer get the ‘19, if you just ride the previous gen would be fine.
I’m wringing my hands over next bike...350, 450, or 250 smoker?

All great inputs. I don’t question that the ‘19 is better, just whether it’s better in ways that would matter to me irrespective of cost. But considering cost, would $1600 in mods applied to an ‘18 be even better? The answer to that would be different for each person. James918, I appreciate your thoughts on the ‘19. It’s a compelling case. I wonder how much suspension settings differ and would account for the different feel vs. the frame change or simply being new?

I have a bit of a pessimistic bias when it comes to annual bike improvements. I did my racing in the late 70s and early 80s (that’s Aztec 1981 to the left for the CO folks). After many years away I was surprised at how little I thought the bikes had improved. Better no doubt, but only incrementally. I am encouraged by the durability others are mentioning in the other threads. I just want to ride this bike, not HAVE to fiddle with it all the time.

You’re looking at it the same way I did. Yeah, the ‘19 may be a better bike, but will I, the average Joe, notice? I can take that extra money saved and put it into aftermarket things.

I would go with the 19. Yeah you have to pay 1,6k more for it but the re-sell value is higher and the bike is better overall.

And to be fair, 1,6k in parts doesn't get you that far if you buy a 18. Unless you buy aftermarket parts second hand.

If I get a ‘19 I will strip it down and get the frame powder coated this winter!

Is it wrong that matters to me!? HaCool

I have tried with the suspension. My buddy has a lower link on his 17 and it helped but still not as good as the 19 chassis.
I like what RCMXracing said about if your racing get the 19.
Also Mottofinne said about resale. That’s the whole reason I got rid of my 17. It was easier to sell now with 85 hrs rather then next year with 170hrs, but when it comes down to it $1600 is a lot of money.
