Hi guys, I am working on a friend's 2014 RMZ 450 and believe it or not it has 140 hs from new and it still has never had a rear suspension service. He says it is good for a couple more hours. What are your thoghts on this? The bearings were almost welded to the bushings.

This is the hot set up for woodchucks around here. As your suspension gets blown out, rely on seized bearings to control dampening.

Best thing would be a total teardown and service. How are the wheel bearings, steering head brgs, air fiter, engine oil, fork oil, coolant, silencer packing?

I think the majority of people neglect the shock - Forks are leaking? Oh replace the seals, Never touch the shock.
FWIW at 40 hours the shock oil in my yz250 was hammered, very dark and had contaminates. When I serviced it last I used K2C which is basically clear. The inner cartridge fork oil was actually not AS bad as the shock, but still due for a change. After a 15-20 minute moto the shock body is too hot to even hold onto, the oil is going to lose its intended properties from not only the shear but the heat.

Crazy. Newly serviced suspension is the best thing ever, i would service mine way more often if i could afford it. I get 15-20h on the forks and 25-30h on the shock.

You know what's so funny? The bushing is so worn out (even after cleaning it) that the linkage has a lot of play with new bearings in it, and when I told him about it he said:
"But it didn't have that play before". I can't decide if that is too funny or terribly sad.

I think 40hrs on a shock is pushing it. That thing had to ride like crap, some people blow me away with what they will send it on....

20 hours then I rebuild my shocks. I got a great deal on a nitrogen setup. Less than a 100 bucks. Now it's even easier to do it at home.

well it actually might not of had that play before because the rust may have been filling in the space it now has.
did he buy the bike new?
does he ride thru a lot of water often?
does he pressure wash the bejesus out of it often?
are the bushings still available? if not you can get one made. if you don't know anyone local that can make one i might be able to help you.
just in case you are not aware, some types of grease offer more protection against water getting to the parts. old school marine wheel bearing grease is one of them. you could almost run the part without seals if you use that type of grease. obviously those seals are mainly just to keep dirt out of the bearings and spray washing will get some water in there.

Just think of what an initial greasing would have prevented.... and the sad part is, guarantee there are lots of bikes out there running like this with bling and sweet graphics.

Even more awesome is that the shock seal is not even leaking. Maybe it just run out of fluid
