Debating between the two. cr's right now are averaging 2800. Where a 13 250sx is like 3500. If I got the cr I was going to do a little motor mods to it. Has any one ridden both if so what do you think. Which one handles better?

Can't comment on the old CR, however the 2013 KTM 250SX is an awesome bike(once you fix the forks).
Handles great and is very fast, wish I still had mine.

For me, it wouldn't even be close, KTM. But it really depends on what you are looking for and what type of riding you have in mind. Do you want to tinker with them? Are you leaning towards more turnkey? Are you concerned about re-sale?

Handling and motor traits are different between the two.

I've done a few mods to my 06 engine. I have also owned a ktm. I like the cr better.

All things being equal, maintenance should be pretty equal between the two. However, in the real world, all things are rarely equal. What kind of life did each bike have? Logically, the older options should have more wear and tear that could call for more parts replacements. Again, that is not always the case so I would find out which option has the most time and level of riding on it and plan accordingly. For example, if the CR was a garage queen and the newer KTM was hammered at a high level, then that could provide an answer for you. Some of your questions or concerns will answer themselves.

The CR handles smooth but sluggish, no its not all people make out it to be, after all its almost a 200w frame, while the SX carves agressivly.
Ktm Power is night and day stronger when both bikes are stock.
The standard ktm forks are harsher although resist bottoming better than the cr.
Spend the money on the KTM and save up for a fork revalve.

Sure you can fix a cr but at what cost, brakes, forks, carby , and so on.

If you're tall like me you will struggle to get comfortable on the Honda.

If not, sounds like a good plan. They're great bikes otherwise, and very well built.

if you are short like me you will struggle on the ktm.

build quality is higher on the honda. spares are way cheaper in my area for the honda. cam p has a vast knowledge on the cr s. suspension is way better on the honda. ktms have bells and whistles that newbs love.

I agree with very little of what you said here.

The Honda will need a descent amount of engine work to even be in the same ballpark as the KTM. The brakes will never be on par. The Honda engine, to me, always felt flat and not useable, while my buddies Husky (and KTM's) seemed like it could be ridden at any RPM....while flat out hauling the mail.

Both chassis are pretty well rounded and stable, I would give the nod to the pumpkin in tighter sections. KTM and Honda have excellent build quality, but the pumpkin is much nicer to maintain.

Aftermarket and OEM parts are both readily available for both....KTM produced that generation 250 up until this year so parts are 100% available.

The WP CC forks on the KTM (pre 4cs) are actually quite good and will only need to be sprung for your weight and valved, just as any bike you buy should be.

Keep in mind a 300cc kit can be bolted right on to a KTM, with KTM OEM parts...not some exotic big bore.

They said it on the latest PulpMX show.

I'm a bit skeptical about that statement. Well i'm going to ride the 17 bike in about 1 month.

I'd get the Honda and then do the TX Race kit. Unless your A class turning pro soon it will be more than enough.

13 KTM is a beast. Takes some time to handle it smoothly though. No idea what everybody's problem with KTM's forks are, I have zero problems with it. As for durabilty, we strengthened the subframe, the airbox plastic makes ridges in it so my advice is take a look at the condition of the subframe.

Tough choice. You can go modern with a 250Sx or buy a 9-14 old Honda?

Buy the Honda, That way you will fall in line with the people that buy New/2005 YZ250's at full retail.

Get the new bike. Gonna be easier to get new oem parts in the future.

Get the KTM for all the reasons above. It's fast and if the suspension isn't good enough, then buy a used set of Öhlins.

I have owned many YZ's and a 2003 CR 250. Now have a 2013 SX 250 and really like the bike. As others have said, the forks are the only drawback, but not horrible in my opinion. The action of the fork is def not as smooth as the YZ and my CR had super stiff suspension that was set up for freestyle, so that doesn't count. I added a JBI Pro-Perch to the WP forks recently and it immediately helped, but playing with oil levels as there is still a bit of harshness.

Advantage to the KTM- Motor, Brakes, Clutch, Carb, easy to work on.

Advantage to Honda- Price and imo styling of the bike.

For a difference of 700 bucks you can't go wrong w the KTM, unless its roached.

Actually only Keefer said it, Ping hasn't rode it yet. Of course Keefer gets off on every YZ so you have to consider the source.

A couple years ago when I rode a 2012 crf450, I had a chance to ride a 2013 sx250 and a 2006 rm250 back to back a bunch at Pala and Perris. For me no contest, rm was hands down way more fun to ride and easier to ride fast.

The KTM, duh. Seems kind of like a no-brainer. I don't know if I would limit myself to the decision between 2 bikes.

Yeah well i would expect that. But since i haven't tried the 2017 i can't say for sure. I will try one at my dealer demo day in one month.

I have never been an owner of a YZ but i have ridden the 125 and 250.

suppose the '17 ktm is finally better than the '06 yz. wow what a turd the ktms were back then. 11 years behind. i had a 03 250 sx. never going back to ktm ever.

buy the one you like and enjoy it.

Jesseman's old Tuf racing bike. One of my favorites..

Fyi older Honda's have rear brake issues. Steel braided line usually fixes it.
