125 gearing to reduce revving

Hello.
I have a Ktm 125. I realize this sounds stupid, but I'm kinda scared of high-rpms. I tend to chop the throttle on jumps faces because the power is too instant and I'm scared of the slighest turn of the throttle. I'm far more comfortable just strolling in high gears, but that's far slower.
I currently run 13/51, could a gearing change help a little?

Not being a smart ass at all, but maybe a 250F would be a better option for your style. I don't think any gearing change will take away the hit.

I tried a 2017 kx250f multiple times and quite honestly I don't like it at all.

I don't have a problem with the hit itself, it's just that on long straights with jumps I feel that it's too reactive. Like the power is too on/off... If that's understandable... Maybe what I want is longer gears so I can hold third for longer without revving so much.
Sorry if I'm spouting nonsense, I'm kind of a noob.

Taller gearing will mute the power, but you can upshift as well. End result is going slower.
You really just need to get comfortable with the bike, they're supposed to rev and be aggressive.

Not at all, we all have to start somewhere. Colintrax said it best, just put in time and get comfortable.

Flywheel weight might be a good option to mellow the power

You could add another base gasket ,it would lower the compression a bit .

if you drop 1 or 2 teeth off the back sprocket . the change of gearing will change the power of what gear you are in ie ,if you drop 2 teeth and you use to take a turn in 2nd gear ,You might find that you cant take that same turn in second anymore .so now you may take it in 1st which might even be more aggressive . It s more about what gear you want to be able to corner in

on a 125 you really need to rev the crap out of them to make power so if you want to be mellow ,short shift

That's what was thinking too.

I was in a similar situation with a 250 two stroke and the fww mellowed out the power.

Try putting a large tooth on the rear and a small tooth in the front, but it will reduce top speed

exactly what i would recomend as well,

a 49 tooth rear sprocket will do a little bit, but a flywheel weight, or a heavy flywheel of an exc will do it as well,

Get a 250 smoker, a 125 will NEED to be revved to ride it with any kind of speed, no fixing your problem with gearing or FWW

I would say flywheel weight as well, I'm a big fan of them. It's a relatively cheap option to try to, so even if you decide you don't like it then you aren't out a massive sum of money.

Sounds like you're just not a two stroke guy. Get a four stroke.

Ever ridden a 125 with a FFW?

If you aren't ever going to rev that pinger you need to get rid of it.

Big time!! They just fall out of band way to easy with a FWW, you'll have to rev it even more than you are ATM, and even then it'll suck. You'll be on the clutch more than the throttle.

125's rock! More fun than 250's IMO. I'd say just rev fuck outta the 125, that's what they're made for.
The "slightest turn of the throttle" won't do much on a 125. Might sound faster lol, but that's about all. Hold it on!!

Typically a 125 has a 12 on the front, 144's run a 13. It should be a pussy cat with 13/51.

Get earplugs so the engine noise doesn't sound so intimidating and keep throttle pinned Smile

Yes I have, my cr125 has one on there. It's been a long time since I put it on, but it helps the bike not fall off as quickly and keeps things revving smoothly. I have one on my 250 as well, it helps take away a little bit of bottom end hit while making the bike rev smoother and more linearly. Some people like them and others don't I guess, but just because you don't like it for your riding style doesn't mean that it won't work for him. Based on what he's told us it seems like a good option for him to try, it's a lot more practical than "sell it and get a 250", especially for a beginner.

I have one on my 250 2T, but I ride off road. I'm thinking the ear plugs would be a better soloution Tongue .

Thanks guys. I will try to get comfortable with revving, but in the meantime I'll get ear plugs and look into a flywheel. Next sprocket will be a 50t. I'll see how it goes.

You are right with a 250 they work well. But a 125 not even the slightest bit.

Ps I'd buy a xr200 and put a fly wheel on it!! Tames it down a bit to help the huge hit!! Haha

Just wanna update this. I rode with earplugs today and it was infinitely better.
Thanks a lot
