my brother has been on a 125 4t for a season to learn and know we need something with more power, we decided to go down the two stroke path indefinitely but he might be to small for the 125 2t, so i thought maybe a kx100 for a season or 2 might be good but our parents just want to get him a bike that he can keep for a while. Give me your opinion, here is some more info about him that might help

he is about 5'7 and weighs 120, he is a bit skinny i won't lie. we ride a lot on the sand and on the trails and a good amount on the track. his current bike is a CRF125B. he as little to no experience on 2t but he has ridden my yz125 a couple times before

if you have any thoughts please do comment and give your thoughts

If he can get his feet on the ground on the 125, go for it.

The 125 2T will be a heck of a lot different than the CRF125, but if he's ridden yours, he has an idea of what he is getting himself into. 125 all the way.

125. My boy is 5'1" and rides a KX100 BW. He'll move up to a 125 as soon as he's 5'5"

at 5' 7" .... he's plenty tall enough for a big bike. If your parents want a bike that will last a while, get a 450

^Well, a 450 would last him the rest of his short lifespan. Sad

125, for sure. Those are great bikes to learn on and he can be challenged and rewarded for years on one.

If I was his stats, I'd find an 02-07 CR 125, just because they handle so well. They're down on power a bit compared to other's, no SSS boingers like the YZ but at his weight...who gives a crappola. Just a thought.

I would say if hes got the basics down, go for the 125. The bigger wheels will make such a difference in his riding and confidence. I learned on a kx100 and had a really hard time with the form, being 5'6", it was really difficult to stand on the small bike. Plus being a two stroke, it should still be light enough for him to be able to pick it up! Go for those big wheels!

My biggest regret in moto is going from a xr100 to a 125t when i still had 2 years i could have race minis or super minis. If he can race a 85 or super mini still go that route. Im the same height I feel his progress on the bike will be much faster learning to ride a 2 stroke.

I went from an XR80 to a CR125 just fine at 13 years old. The CR250 my dad threw me on for a quick test ride was a real eye opener though, having only ever ridden my XR80 and brothers TT-R 125 before.

Size isn't an issue for him, on a 125 that is. He is probably a little cramped on his bike now and he will be on a KX100. There isn't a lot of power difference between a KX100 and a 125 two stroke. Both are gonna be a huge power increase over a 125 four stroke playbike though. I'd suggest buying the newest, nicest YZ125 or KTM125 you can find in your budget.

No question the 125. My son is 5' 3" and fine on the 125. The 100 will be too cramped for him and hurt his positioning more than helping him at this point at 5' 7"

125 for sure. I'm eleven and probably only 100 pounds in this pic. Although I'm on an older RM 125, I couldn't touch the ground but still I did fine. Sorry for poor quality. Just respect it like any bike.

Yeah, hooking up a near beginner with the narrowest powerband available is a great idea.

Gun n run baby! I picked up a 04 CR 125 for my son a few years ago when he was 17. It might not have the best engine. It might not have a lot of things. But, it was a great platform for him to learn on and as mentioned before the chassis is really good. The only thing I did to it was add a pipe and had the suspension re sprung for his weight.
