Here in the states I've found 18 yz250 out the door prices 6899 usd 18 yz125 6198 out the door usd. 2019 ktm 125sx 6799 18 ktm250sx 6999 and what I went with a 19 ktm 150sx 6999.00 hope that helps you a little bit..... Welcome To The sport!
Thank you very much! I’m seeing stuff like 2008-2010 kx250s for around I’d guess $3000 ? What stuff would you suggest looking at inspecting to see if the bike is in good nick? Also.. seen a lot about bikes needing too end rebuilds after so many hours... is this true? Doesn’t seem like your use it long before your spending $300+ on pistons e.g

Youre not. Buying used bikes means you get the luxury of working on the motor. Plan on it or buy a new one.

Budget just over $2000 , have ridden the odd pit bike and I couldn’t really answer the last one just yet, could either be used for racing or more trials

What they like Maintainence wise? And if I was to go look at a used bike, what should I be looking for to make sure I’m not being sold a shed on wheels?

Change oil every 3-6 hours like any other bike. Depending on how you ride will decide on how long you can go on a piston. Could be between 20-80 hours. All depends on how you ride it.
Plan on a full rebuild on any bike unless the owner has proof of it being done recently.

Two strokes are much easier to work on than 4 strokes, however (and I may be wrong on this) they do require maintenance much more often than a four stroke. I bought an 05 yz250 in April from a fellow vital member and rebuilt it with a new cylinder, crank, main bearings, piston kit and upgraded plastic kit for like $1300. The plastic kit and graphics were $400 alone. Motor was around $900

Cheers pkiczuk will have a look! And would this be decent to handle myself? Like rebuilding it all? So would you get a “ cheaper “ bike and just rebuild it all? Jeeze this is going to be more expensive than I thought ?

Haha. It's not a cheap hobby, but it is the cheapest form of motorsport.
Idk what the market is like in GBR, but here in the states, the 2 strokes are holding their value pretty well. So even a thrashed one isn't all that cheap.

Buddy im going to be real with you. A $3000 2012 kx250f isnt going to cost you $3000. Plan on adding $1500 on top of that for engine work and things like tires. Youre going to need to pay a guy to do this work for you. Dont take it the wrong way but youre just not experienced enough in all this to be able to do that without a buddy to help you. Look for a bike thats been taken care of. Theres a difference in two 8 year old kx250s when one looks like its in showroom condition and the other has brown aluminum.
If you don't have to have a 2 stroke your options will be greater to find a bike. Being your just getting into the sport you don't need a new bike. A few years back when I was between bikes I found a 2006 Yamaha yz450. maybe had 10 hours on it looked new still all original everything. $2300.00 Rode it for a while only oil filter and air filter. Good hardly used bikes are out there.
I have to agree... I just see it as... I don’t drink , smoke , do drugs... so I’d rather spalsh money on something that I’m going to love and I’ll see if I can attach the photo... it’s a mix between under $1000 to around 2-3000 ..... I’m seeing some of these big 450s going cheaper than these 250s it’s strange

Just not worth it at that. Not when I see Good dealers blowing out 18 kx250f for 5789 out the door. Dealer in NC has a new 17 crf250r 5399.00 out the door.
So you think to just save up longer and either get a brand new or something that got next to nothing hours? And 2 stroke or 4....

If it were me and you had a good down payment I'd go new. There's nothing like a new bike. Or save a little more and get a very low hour bike. In the states theres plenty of low hour bikes. Most buy new and just dont have time or injury forces sale. As far as 2 stroke 4 stroke. That's a hard choice. The modern 4 stroke with proper maintenance can last 100 hours now a days without major overhaul. A 250 2 stroke is also very reliable. The debate between 2 and 4 strokes can go on and on. I personally own a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke. And as far as pure fun I'm loving my 2 stroke so far. The 4 stroke 450 is much easier to ride and race. I would start to go look at bikes with a open mind as I'm just looking and get to see what's out there. Here's a picture of my son's bike he's selling it's a 16 Yamaha yz250f with 13 hours on it 800 dollar rocket exhaust. He got a 17 ktm 350sx and doesn't ride it. He's asking 4800 but would take 4500 just so you can compare what's for sale by you
Cheers for the reply’s guys, and I’m in Manchester mate... quite awkward as the council website says “ if your planning on getting a off-road vehicle don’t, as their is no where to ride them “ there’s literally one palace I can ride it... around 30 minuets in a car, small MX track and the rest is just a “ free roam “ quarry

Ah shame, I'm Worcester based, so over 3 hours south of you. Otherwise I could of helped point you in the direction of some good local bikes for sale.
Yeah you're guna need a van, or a trailer at the very least. MX bikes are for designated tracks only, or if you know of a farmer or someone with land who is 100% okay with you riding there. Turning up and riding on private land is a bad idea.
You're quite lucky being sort of near Doncaster, as that is a fantastic spot for riding with some of the UK best tracks (in my opinion) there such as Fatcats and DMP. Not too far from Preston Docks either.
