Let Zach ride Brother Blake's KX 450 this weekend at a local race and finished with a 3rd in the MX Novice class. Not blazing fast but he was happy with his second place start in Moto 2. It was a lot of bike to ride. Zach raced his last 85JR class race a month ago at Huck's Faircross event. This is not a permanent move just a temporary ride since the 250F did not work out this weekend. Zach is a big boy at 165 lbs + and has some height to go with that.
Younger Brother Trace moved up to Zach's 85 this weekend and finished 2nd in the Supermini and a 3rd in the 85 JR's in his first race on the 85cc bikes. Trace needs to get a little more confidence built up for jumping the bigger jumps, then he should do well....
Just wanted to ramble.... Later.

The minimum age for amateur riders is 12-years.
In all off-road events, a rider must be 14-years or older to
ride motorcycles above 250cc. The age of the rider is
determined as of the date of the event, except in youth
competition.

I thought I was riding the space shuttle, cause we went straight up! What a (temporary) mess.
seriously, cool. Glad to hear someone talk about riding.
That is a great family sport and past time. Congrats!
I remember the first time I cleared the 90 foot double on a CR 250, I could barely reach the pegs, I never wanted to ride the 80 again.
I bet you'll be glad to be totally done with those mini's!

As for Zach he is more confidant on the 250F's, but like I said that did not work out this time. Zach has ridden my Two Stroke 330 Honda and Blake's 450 before during a practice day at a friends track and he likes the 450 better. My 330 hits hard and the 450 has a smoother power for him.
I would not have let him ride either bike if I did not think he was not capable. Just a local race with nothing on the line except fun, and he did have fun....
As for kids riding "big" bikes.... When I was Zach's age a friend would ride his Brothers TM 400, 1974 model and haul ass through the desert on that thing. He never did get into racing though....
Thanks again...!
Other than that, no problem at all.
Life in general is dangerous, weather it be walking down the street, riding a bicycle, playing Football, driving a vehicle, drive by shootings, the list goes on and on. No matter what you do you can be injured or worse loose your life whatever you are doing, or by someone else's actions outside of your control.
My parents had the same concerns as most do about their children getting hurt, paralyzed or even death. I explained to them that there are worse things that I could be doing but I choose to race. If I were to get hurt, paralyzed or worse, death, it would be something I would accept and they understood that. Since it happened doing something I love to do and have a passion for doing I accept what comes along with racing. I would really be pissed off if I were paralyzed by some ones irresponsible actions like a drunken driver hitting me and causing paralysis or even death as an example.
I don't make my boys ride or race, they make that choice themselves. If they want to do a church activity or something different outside of racing then they get to do it. They have a long life ahead of them for racing if they chose to do so, so there is plenty of time to do other activities too.
I just want to share what I have enjoyed my whole life with my boys, that I could not do as a child at their age. When the time comes for them to go down another road, they will have memories of their racing times and racing friends that will last a lifetime. I know I do.....
I have seen 40 year old riders that couldn't handle a 125 and 13 year olds that fly on a 450.....it depends on the rider.
Obviously thought and judgement go into it and based on Ark's post he seems qualified to make those choices.
I "woke up" when my 10 year old was riding a borrowed 125, which was set up for somebody 60lbs heavier. Everthing was fine and he had a great time until the front tucked under at high speed and both he and the bike were cartwheeling down the track.
Luckily only the bike was badly broken but I only need 1 warning..............
Post a reply to: 12 year old on a 450..?
