We sold our first one today, and as I was prepping it I thought I'd to do the guy a favor and go ahead and turn the idle up for him. I went to turn the idle up, and I realized what I thought was the idle adjustment was more like a choke knob, it just raised the idle up when you pulled it, the manual said nothing about it pulling out, and that twisting it like any other adjuster would raise/lower the idle. Well, turning it had absolutely no effect on anything at all. After I first started it up, it barely idled, then I gave it a crack of the throttle and it died, and would not run without the lever pulled out. I went and got the other 450 we had, and it pretty much did the same thing, they told me to go spin a few laps on the non-sold one to see if it helped, and it died several times on me and didn't change. After a while it just magically started up and idled normally, but the other one still won't idle. None of the other techs could figure it out either, and had the same reaction I did.

Basically, how the fuck do you adjust the idle? Unless the two we got were lemons, I don't see how it can be changed.

we were seriously about to tear into it before the other one magically started up. The manual says the knob turns to adjust the idle, and says nothing about it pulling out like it does. It sounds stupid and easy, but the other technician has been working there for about 25 years, so I know I'm not alone in my confusion. Any help that might make it easier from someone who has one? It'll make me look super awesome if I get it to run before anyone else.

So you saying the other one magically started up? You mean it was just sitting there and it started?

Maybe the adjustment knob for the fuel injector?

Pull nob out, and turn it for the adjustment. Spinning said nob, without it pulled out does nothing. This is a hypothetical, yet logical guess.

I just picked up my 450 thursday and it didn't idle very well either. I hooked up an hour meter/tach to it and set the idle. To do this I pulled the knob out to start the bike, and let it idle with the knob out for about a minute, then pushed the knob back in and rode it around for about 5 minutes to warm it up. Then I checked the RPM's on the tach, which read about 1200. I turned the knob counter clockwise (i think) until it reached 1800 RPM's. When you turn the knob you should feel it click, kinda like a compression ajuster. Make sure it's set in the right spot and not in the middle. Good luck

I have a 09 crf450 and had the same problems with it dying when first started up. So I tried turning the yellow knob. At first I turned it clockwise didnt seem to do anything. Then I turned it counter clockwise and the idle goes up. This has to be done I believe with the knob in however not out. Now mine works great!

Allright I will STFU now!

yes, but it neglected to mention which way to turn it, and I never thought in a million years you would turn it out instead of in. I didn't spend too much time messing with it since I had other shit to do and the other one started running. I thought that maybe I had turned it too far in (i guess now I lowered the shit out of it) and that it was too high for it to even start.

To the 2 helpful replies, thanks a bunch.

There should be a marking right on the choke knob like there is on my RMZ450...same company makes the throttle body.

fyi, it's on page 57 in the CRF450 Owners manual.
Not hard to find, it's in the index as well.

there's a difference between an owner's manual and a service manual, being that the owner's manuals are usually dumbed down a bit, which would have been helpful in this case. Service manual simply said to turn the idle adjustment to raise and lower the idle. Did not specify direction, and since 100% of bikes I have worked on in the past have been clockwise=idle up, I think I've got a good reason for having a bit of confusion.

I've played with mine a whole bunch(no not my pecker). Turning the choke/fast idle knob, to the left will raise the idle speed.

To the left, to the left........ counter-clockwise is correct.

Turn the stupid knob dummy. There's only ONE knob on the whole bike.
