Got a buddy that wants to sell me his 01 CR500. Low hours, always maintained, etc. etc. one owner. He doesn't know what it's worth and neither do I. How much should I offer in good faith?

I would pay 3000 maybe 3500. Depends on compression and suspension. Good plastic not so much. What ever you do, do not listen to kawboy14 cause obviously he is only 14.. You should know that any fourstroke you buy you are taking more of a gamble.. So for that the CR500 is worth more than them.. Ing, lets ask kawboy14 what tricycle oops bike he rides...

I'd say $1200 to $1800, depending on condition. "Insane One", would you really pay $3500 for a 12 year old dirt bike?

It's worth what any 11 model year old 2 stroke is worth. MAYBE a touch more if it's nice. Don't buy into the "oooooh it's a classic collector" no longer in production. This coming from a CR500 guy.

Well yes I would.. If I did not have my CR500AF.. Seeing that its a CR500 no regular joe can ride it to its full potential. I would have to say even with some amount of naglect the bike is still faster and more reliable than any kawboy oops, I mean fourstroke.. Laughing Not to mention easier to maintain and less costly to rebiuld.. When I had my steel framed CR500's at the tracks. I would let anybody ride it if they wanted to.. I should have taped them riding it and what they had to say about the bike when they finally gave it back to me.. Buy it and if you get it for less than 3000 you got a good deal. Then once you get used to the power and handling race against your other buddies 450fs..Wink

Slapaho, its a 2001 not a 1991. Even there are some who think theses two bikes are the same, well, guess again. THEY ARE NOT.!!! The 2001 has much better suspension the subframe geometry is a little different. The transmission gearing is not the same changed that in 1993. Fourth and fifth gears wear made to be taller. Plus in 1994 the engine cases wear made lighter.. Do you need another slap. lol Cool

Dude, you are delusional. I don't care how nice it is, it's not worth $3000.

I swapped an 04' YZ250 for my 2000 CR500. I paid $400 and a $2.50 spark plug for the YZ250. $3,000 would have to be a seriously clean bike.

You guys need to buy those bikes up, export them to me in the UK.

A very clean 01 in the UK will go for 5000 dollars. An untouched one or as new will go between 7-12000 dollars.

If you could get me a bunch of very clean 01's and very clean 89's I would be interested in doing a deal with anyone at the right price of course.

For example

I paid $2800(? memory is failing me on the exact number) for my 01 CR500 back in early 2008, it had been owned by a 50 year old man and never ridden at all, it had maybe 20 hours on it total. The paint hadn't even been worn off the frame yet, it looked like a brand new dirtbike. Original plastics, original tires, etc. I sold it at the end of 2010 with 2 spare sets of wheels, suspension work, etc, and I think I got $2500 for it after being advertised for several months, some guy drove from 5 hours away to buy it. I'd also ridden it a ton and it didn't look like a new bike anymore.

Mine was in better shape that this one when I got it:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CR500R-Motocross-MX-Open-Class-/28…;

I don't think that bike will sell for anywhere close to the buy it now price, especially due to the tank and it being a '97 instead of an '01.

Well it is a seriously clean example. I'll start at $2K. I don't want to piss the guy off, it is that clean.

there are people playing 2k for just a motor.

some day soon i will be looking for another motor, if not a whole bike. an 01 would be cool. and yes for the right bike i would pay 2500-3000 in a second. but this is a pet project and i am not ready to start on that yet.

How many can you afford? I'll give you a smoking deal @ 2,800 on as many as you want.

Really, somewhere around 1,700 to 2,000. Bikes from the 90's typically get right around 1k around here. But, there is certainly added value to it being a 500. I sold a nice (not perfect) 1994 KX500 for $1500 recently.

What bikes go for varies by location also. Thats dirt cheap for an 03 in that condition.

Probably won't be for a couple of days, the guy lives about 30min. from me. The nice thing is, the bike isn't actually for sale but he told me he'd consider selling it to me as he knows what a big bore nut I am. Raced the open class all my life.

I had no idea those vibrating, ill handling, wheel spinning terds had solid gold swim arms.....3500 buck???? You better go back to the fridge and reload your arm chair. How would an 11 year old bike be less of a gamble then say an 09 kawi 450? You two stroke guys are insane, like legit out in cloud 9. I see you are from new York, want to meet at Broome on an open practice day....I wanna see you ride a 500 to its potential.

I heard this as well when I was over in England and I had a similar discussion I just don't know how much they would cost to ship, then there is your high taxes and dutys. I am not sure it would be that much of a savings. The reason you guys are short on low price bikes is because of taxes and fees. The bike cost so much a very small minority buy them new and then resale includes those taxes. I can tell you we have a glut of used bikes both 2 and 4 stroke that are cheap. But I fear that will eventually go away as the prices of new bike increase.

Two strokes are especially cheap since the demand for used ones is so low. Look at craigslist in any major city and you will find them, when spring/summer comes the number will only increase.
