If you know someone who's had a 2017 KTM 350 XC-F stolen recently: this Offer Up ad may be worth taking a look at. Hopefully this thing gets returned to it's real owner and karma slaps this guy around. I'm sure there's another legible VIN on there somewhere... but just having it scratched off is enough to be arrested.

Police won't pursue this. It's value isn't great enough.

Over 950 in California is a felony. If they can prove it’s stolen, it at least gets the guy arrested for a few days until his court date.

Defacing the VIN can land you in hot water all by itself, auction receipt or not. Even if it were from an auction and had the VIN defaced by the previous owner a title for the bike still has someone else’s name on it somewhere. The $950 figure is for the new 487 charges changed by Prop 47. 10851 doesn’t require the dollar amount.

Police likely won’t self-initiate an investigation into it but that isn’t based on the bike’s value. If the person who got ripped off took this info to the police along with their original stolen report the cops would absolutely look into it.

Thanks
I will report back with my findings...

I talked to him and he’s got a guy coming to look at it tonight. If it doesn’t sell tonight, I got my cop buddy going to meet him to look it at tomorrow (as an interested buyer 😎)
If the guy is telling the truth, he says he bought it as a theft recovery, thru the auction. Frame .#’s and motor #’s are ground off... along with the part # on the top triple clamp ! Lol

Looks like his story has already changed. Went from owner not making payments and getting repossessed to being stolen and auctioned. Haha. What a tool and a lousy thief.

No public or private auction company that I am aware of will allow a vehicle to be up for auction without a title or mso in hand.
