My son is looking for a Toy Hauler that he can live in for 18 months while at flight school in Alabama next spring.
He wants one that has a separate garage and is a 5th wheel style. He has a 3/4 ton Ram pickup. Anyone have any recommendations on what to look for?
Does anyone have one for sale that is in great condition?

I've got a 2008 Keystone Raptor 3814 SS that I'll sell. It's got a 14' garage. I haven't used it in three years. Prior to that it sat on a permenant site at Motosports Park.

Only advice I have is be sure the truck can legally tow the 5th wheel. Probably ok from max weight, but a 5th wheel toy hauler with a separate garage is usually quite heavy at the pin. Check to be sure the truck has the payload capacity for the rig. Not saying the truck isn’t capable of towing it, but if you happen to get into an accident, they will get you for exceeding the trucks ratings and you can forget insurance covering anything.

I work for a firm that does a lot of crash accident forensics for lawyers and insurance companies. This is one of the first things they check when trailers are involved.

You may be able to find a trailer that works within the trucks capacities, just something to consider in your search. Good luck!

@mxbrian15 - I am the one searching for the Toyhauler. I have a Ram 2500 Diesel, and will look more into pin weight at each rig, putting that into consideration. Thank you very much for the info! Messages sent to the other two posts! Thank you!

Just make sure the 5th wheel hitch you get is at minimum 18K hitch and your limitation for tow weight will be do to the single rear tires. The unit Cad as posted as a dry weight of 12045 lbs for base model, 4455 lbs of cargo and 2635 lb hitch weight. It will be a good unit for you, depending on condition.

If you're bringing your bike/bikes be careful riding. They frown upon things like that while at flight school, speaking from experience. If you do ride while there hit up Jamie at Riverside in Newton, pretty fun track and very close. Of course Monster Mountain is a must and Millcreek is pretty fun as well but a bit farther, around the Birmingham area. Good luck at flight school and enjoy it, it's a good time! Congrats on getting selected as well!

@tmizz181 - Unfortunately, I sold my dirt bike because I knew if I had a bike, I’d ride, and if I ride I would crash, and if I crash... well.. yeah haha NO BUENO. Sold the dirt bike, but I cannot bring myself to sell my street bike. It’ll just be the motorcycle in the back! Also thanks! It’ll be a great time.

The hitch weight listed for your truck is for the bumper pull and you should have a class 5 reciever. The bed of your truck should be 5000# payload so a 2600# hitch weight is ok.

Just as important, the load capacity of your tires, I will recommend that you get the highest load rating tires you can get for a single rear, so you limit your chances for a blow out and the loose rear feeling.

I’ve never seen a 3/4 ton truck with 5000 lbs payload capacity. That’s 1 Ton territory. Most 3/4 tons are in the 2500 lbs range give or take 500 lbs depending on configuration.
