So I went and got an 05 Crf250r a couple weeks ago and it’s a great bike. Pretty quick and really fun to ride. It’s all stock though and I wanna do mods but I don’t know what to do first. So anyone know anything about these bikes?? Like what goes bad/wrong on them first or the best thing to put on them to get the best performance out of them??Thanks for the help

I'm pretty sure those years liked to eat valves, most people use kibblewhite valves in them i think.

Freshen it up, they certainly eat valves. I would remove the swingarm/linkage and replace the bearings and seals if they are not in good shape

My buddy just got rid of his 05 last year. He had Factory Connection do the suspension and the rest was stock. Freshened it up every 2 years and that thing was solid. He isn't hard on stuff so that helped the longevity also. Im doing a project with my 05 450 right now can't wait to get that thing back on the track. Good Luck

I loved the 04-05 CRF250 motors. They did eat valves like crazy though.

If I remember correctly, they really liked the Hot Cams stage 1 or 2 cam. But I really liked the motor stock.

Put an 08 CRF250R cam in it... along with the stock 2008 intake and exhaust valve springs. Much better cam then the stock 2005 one.

Next find a used pipe for it. FMF.

Check the valve clearance and then keep an eye on it. If it’s moving out of spec rapidly or difficult to start.... valves are smoked. Put some money aside and do the kibble white stainless valves with new seats and you will be golden. Did it to my 04 and it was great after that

You can do yourself one better and just look for a nearly new complete head from an 07 to 09 and just slap that puppy on there ...I did that with an 04 CRF250 that I acquired some years back ...thin was nearly brand new and the valves were already way out of spec so rather than mess with it I had a spare complete head off my 07 (at the time) andbputbitbon the 04 while I was installing am Athena 280 big bore kit with a stage 2 hot cam.....you wanna talk about fun?? That bike was AWESOMENESS!! I'm a big fan of those 04-05 CRF250's and I know the 06-09 were very similar but I had a couple 04-05 CRF250's at an incredibly awesome time in my life and had so much fun riding the piss out of them, they were such great bikes aside from the stretchy valves which was an easy thing to remedy .... they were light, handled great, fast and had great suspension bone stock.

One of these days I'm gonna start a thread with pictures of every bike Ive owned over the years and comment briefly my experiences riding them, it should be pretty entertaining. I'm 39 and have owned something like 25 or so bikes, all of which I've paid for except for my first 3
