Best 2 stroke out there?

Looking to get a good a 2 stroke bike heard ktm's were good, any suggestions and direction on what to look for and what to avoid would be greatly appreciated. I'm 25, 5'6", at 145lbs, if that makes a difference.

Was thinking about buying used if I could find one that was already modded out somewhat but the was also just considering forking out the greenbacks for a new 2018 ktm 150 sx, what are your thoughts, I heard and was watchings some vids on YouTube of the pro sponsored fmx riders at competitions saying some simply prefer the two strokes because they are lighter weight then the four strokes,

leaning towards the 150's opposed to the 250's because of less weight and just mod some and tune wise to get the take offs right, right before a jump at tracks and hills and whatnot, looking more for freestyle and whipping and stuff not really racing at all, and the 150's seem to get the job done quite well, what's your thoughts on 150's opposed to the 250's? Given my height and weight?

Also I tore the acl in my right knee sparring in my gym not to long ago and it's still not thst great seeing how I never did the physical therapy for it so that's also a reason I was pushing for lighter weight and just enough if not just more then enough power for the jumps, and heard great things about the ktm's.

I’m a life long Honda guy I got many Honda 250s and 125s. Having said that there is no 250 two stroke I’ve ridden that was better than a yz250. They are basically unchanged for the last 13 years aside from a few suspension and body updates. They have loads of power and handle like a dream. Since they haven’t changed much parts from many years will fit alot of bikes. That’s what I would recommend.

How do your 125's compare to your 250's? Overall weight difference? Did you do any mods/ upgrades to them? Any mods/upgrades you recommend to do?

buy a 125 if you want to ride wide open.. 250 just twist..

I've got a mint RM 250. All original with 10 hours on it. Plus pipe/silencer and showa A-kit suspension I just mounted on it. Won't get better than this and it's for sale. Smile

That's a sweet Suzuki ^, I wouldn't mess with a 125, unless your into eating rocks.A full mod 20 thousand dollar big bore A kitted 125 with a pro rider will barely be as fast as a clapped out 250f with an intermediate. I love my YZ250, and parts are available and cheap, but the things the Austrians have done for two strokes can't be ignored.

Cant speak about 125 or 150.
But i think you cant compare other 250 with the new KTM / Husqy.
Very different to ride the engine.
Ktm / husky much easier than the „old“ 250s

If you can, test ride them. Some people like the hard to ride two stroke hot from older ones, some not!
You can adjust the power valve on ktm / husky so they have a big hit too.

Alright thanks and yea I seen some dirt tracks around Austin that do free test ride demos for bikes like the new 2018 125's and 250's, was looking into that seeing how I've seen many people recommend Yamaha yz250's, is there a huge weight difference between 150s and the 250's? And I mean also to an extent if you have the coin to mod out your bike and tune it right, that can make up a considerable difference.

If I was 5'6" and 145 lbs., I'd finance a new YZ125. Yamaha has great financing, they are very durable, great suspension, and I would think a new one could be found for around 6.5-7K.

A KTM or Husky would be good as well if willing to pay a little more.

Buying a used 125 can be sketchy given that many are ridden very hard by young males who may think maintenance is optional. Of course once sold the wear and tear is someone else's problem.

I'm 6' and 180 or so, so I got a YZ250. It is ideal for me, but I have more leverage and an extra 35 lbs. on the seat. I have been riding for 20 years as well, and experience seems to help a great deal on the 250 two-stroke.

Yea was looking at the new 2018 ktm 150 sx actually, they run around $7,199 brand new and $8,199 for the fuel injected version which adds an additional 6 pounds, and really just save up the cash, and I've seen pro fmx riders on youtube whipping the fuck out of 150s and gotten crazy air time with plenty of speed and power, clearly they modded their bikes, but still.

Haha your a funny guy a pro on a stock 125 could lap a b or c class rider on a brand new 250 no problem

this pro fmx riders can do this in the same way with 250s...
If you want much power and a bike that feels like a Mountainbike if you compare it with a 450f, go for 250.
If you dont need the power and want to safe some weight go for 125.
if you want something between go for 150 :D


If you can whip, you can do it with all bikes.


Think no one can help you with your choice.
Best was to figure it out is test ride all the bikes.
Or do it like me, just buy and hope its ok for you :D

I'm not talking about racing at all, strictly speaking freestyle, doing stunts and stuff, once I get more accustomed to this 150 I plan on getting, I plan on modding it out and upgrading it quite a bit. Probably move up to a 250 soon then as well. Thanks for all the info.

Why mod it out if your going to just be doing fmx,if anything spend the money on having your suspension done if your going to be doing fmx you'll need good suspension or tour going to eat shit alot, a "modded"out motor is useless in that category of riding

Suspension is a given, once I get the bike and know the full extent of its capabilities, I'm just going to fine tune it and just make it overall better with better parts, and if I decide to race with it, then it's going to be one dope af bike, regardless.

I work 70 hours every week so I don't have much time for other stuff, I box at my local gym most days after work, and on my day off I like to hit up a good dirt track with my bike and catch some air and do some cool stunts then hit up the nearby lake with my truck and do gainers off the cliffs,

I just want some decent stuff to do what I enjoy doing since I was a kid.

Hard to beat a yz250 man. Just a good, solid overall package. Parts are cheap and readily available anywhere. The freakin' pipe is the same from 1999-2018. Can't go wrong with a YZ. RM would probably be my second choice.

The weight difference between my 2010 YZ250 and 2006 YZ125 is only 14lbs. Yes, I have weighed them.

Just moving the bikes around in the garage you can feel the weight difference.

That said, once you get used to the power, the 250 is easier to ride due to the torque.

Can you drastically decrease the weight of a 250 without compromising structural integrity with lighter weight parts and still have it faster?

I have a seat that has been cut down that is worth 1lb. But it sucks for cornering due to the valley in the middle of the seat.

I have heard of running the fat tire bicycle inner tubes with supposed weight saving of 2 pounds per wheel (or something like that).

Michelin tires are supposed to be light weight too.

Titanium fasteners are an option.

Titanium is your best friend but regardless you not going to lose 100 pounds off a bike , get the bike first ride it learn how to use all it's power ,saving weight isn't going to make you a faster rider if you don't know how to ride the power of the bike in the first place, too many ppl have the baddest ass bikes out there and can't ride worth a shit ,the pro riders you see on YouTube also have years of experience and can "whip" Any bike they ride doesn't matter there talented riders and train and most the new age fmx guys ride 4 strokes and there's a reason less run up speed needed and more torque

Can't you just put some sort of super performance upgrade kit to drastically increase the torque, hp, and such on 2 strokes though? And of course not losing 100lbs but shaving off like 15lbs or something, could that be done? A noticeable difference for you.

Seriously, like it was said above.

Get a bike and ride it, and ride and ride it some more.
Then after 2 or 3 years see if you feel you need more power or lighter weight.

Yea when you go to ktm to get the 150 ask for the power band package make sure the put the purple one in ,it gives you at least another 70hp and ask for the nitro button upgrade,if you want alot of power create a airleak and unhook you kill switch it's like cruze control

I think they discontinued the Nitro Button upgrade. Too many people were getting hurt.
