Guy's

I'm about to rebuild a 82" Maico 490 for a friend.

Trying to decide if I should powder coat it or paint it.

Called one of the local Powder coat shops & let him know what parts I needed done.

Forks,Frame & Swing-arm for the big parts, small parts are the swing-arm toggle, brake stay & brake pedal, foot pegs.

The estimate was $410 + tax, seems a little high to me. what are you guy's finding ?

Here my old painted 82' Maico that was painted for reference. I know most of the younger guys have no clue what 82" Maico looks like.Photo

If he is sandblasting it all then thats not too terribly overpriced. Going rate for a frame is 150-200

Powder code is the only option. If you don't do it it will look like shit . Any gas spill on the frame or roost or scratch and is over. Do it right or don't do it at all !

The price is a little high, but if the guy does quality work it's certainly worth the extra coin. I know a little about Maico's....the roost hurts !! Always been a Maico fan, just never could find or afford one in the early 80's. Good look'n bike bigm.

For old frames I use paint. Because if you have small crack on the frame, you´ll see. If you have powder, no chance to reveal it. Nice bike at all.

My dad raced those back then. He has an 81 now. 2nd at lorettas in 82 and 83. he used to sandblast the paint off the forks. it was going to come off anyway from roost or ruts.
