I had been searching for just the right yz125 to do a build on for well over a year now. Yz125s for a good price are pretty tough to come by in my area due to their popularity. I finally came across one for the listing price of $1800. I went and looked at the bike and offered the kid $1300 and he took it!
I ran my first race ever on a 2002 yz125 in 2004 at the Rolling Hills night track in North Carolina. I've only ridden a 125 a couple of times since I sold that bike back in 2005. I'm more than ecstatic to get this build done so I can get back to where it all started for me and just simply have some fun!
Here's what the bike looked like right after I unloaded it off the truck!
As I started tearing the bike down it became clear that the bike doesn't have many hours on it but the time that is on it was pretty rough. I believe the kid only rode it in the field around his house but he waited until it was quite muddy to ride and rarely washed it. Everything is mud stained pretty badly. So far all of the bearings on the bike seem to be in perfect shape and actually have a good amount of grease in them. I believe this gem is just a diamond in the rough!
The air filter just fell apart as I tried to pull it out and the air box is a mess with a rat and wasp nest.

Good luck!

Finally, I gave it a nice rub down with some wd-40 and a maroon scotchbrite!
I ended up adding HGS pipe, Pro Circuit R304 Silencer and Vforce 3 reeds and some head skimming combined with a bit of jetting and suspension work and it absolutely flies, everyone who rides it comes back grinning like an idiot.
Only problem with the first of the Aluminium frames that I can think of is the shift stopper bearings coming out and going through the gearbox. Update them to the 07 and up part.
I have went ahead and purchased a new cylinder. The plating on the inside at exhaust bridge was starting to peel.
