Recently picked up a low hour good condition 2006 RM250 here in Australia. They are becoming really hard to find a decent one as years go on and I’ve always been a Suzuki rider since juniors up until now with this bike being #10 in a row. I own a current model RMZ450 and now the RM250 I’ve got the best of both worlds although if things dont improve with the big bikes at Suzuki I think there will be a colour change happening for 2021. I’ve ridden the 250 a few times now but decided it needed some attention so stripped it down and started the rebuild process and hopefully turn it into one of my favourite bikes growing up as a kid.

First up was to remove the suspension and send for valving, springs and coatings as turn around time can be months. Minus the RMZ fork in the pic

Good find down here for sure! Took me ages to find a decent 08 for a fair price..if you don’t mind me asking where are you send the suspension to? It’s pretty much the last thing I want to do on mine

That’s a nice RM you’ve got there, colour scheme all ties in well together too. I missed out on a really nice 07,08 before finding this one. Depends what you want done, DLC coatings can be done in Aus but Kashima and Tin have to be sent away and can take months to return as they send batch numbers over. I’m in NSW and I sent it to my local suspension guy to organise. Will send you a message with some details of places that can do them.

Knowing the plans you’ve got for this bike and your attention to detail, I know this will be next level mate. Keen to see this bike take shape, the early to mid 2000 factory Suzuki’s are some of the coolest factory bikes ever 🙌🏽🤘🏽

Thanks mate. If I can get mine close to yours I’ll be happy.Hopefully be able to pair them up for a pic one day soon. I’m also open to any spare RM 250 parts you have lying around unused too 😂

Next in line was to weld in some blocks with 6mm threads on the inside of the frame rails to secure the skid plate to the frame in replacement of the alloy hooks to hopefully keep the powder coat intact over time.

Decided on gloss black powder coat on the frame and cleaned up the lower triple clamp, linkage, link arm and replaced all the bearings as the oem ones were in pretty bad shape.

Coming together nicely. Looks really good! I like the shiny black frame, it’s different but so far it looks really clean.

Thanks! It’s been a long process getting everything right but you’ll see what direction I’m heading in the next few posts.

Made up an engine stand for the RM engine that will be stripped down and inspected just so I know where everything is at so it can be fully rebuilt and machined, ported before cases etc are sent for vapour blasting to remove 15 years of build up.

That turned out amazing! I'm thinking of removing the cast lines on my linkage as well. What is needed and what is the process to make it look like that?

Thanks! It’s a time consuming process but you’ll need some different grade files, different grades sand paper/ wet and dry, die grinder and wheel and a lot of patience. Looks good in the end though!

Just use a dremel with a rotary sander attachment, and then move to different scotch brite attachments ending on finest grit. I’ve done that a few times, really quickens up the process.

Mark from Pioneer Finishes did an awesome job on the vapour blasting and cerakote. The engine was fully rebuilt top and bottom with all genuine parts used after finding out the top end was full of sludge and the gearbox/bearings weren’t great from poor oil quality/ not getting changed. Porting and machining done to broaden out power delivery.

What brand of bolts did you use on the engine? They look great. Nice work!

Thanks! I used pro bolt flanged hex head bolts, they worked well for all the case bolts etc besides the 2 powervalve adjustment bolts I ended up using polished up oem bolts as they had more surface area.

Lightspeed parts arrived for the RM FINALLY!! This was a very painful experience waiting for these parts and after 11 months and countless phone calls to them they turned up on my door step.

All I can say is good luck! I know they had recently done a run on a few RM parts but I’ve been getting stuffed around the whole time, everytime I called they’d said they’ll be ready in 2-4 weeks this went on for ages. Still waiting on a chain guide so who knows when I’ll see that

Suspension valving and spring rates changed and coatings done. Pretty happy with how it all turned out. Swapped out the 2006 upper fork tubes for the later model 2007 and up forks as I preferred the fork guard mounting and removal of the plastic guide.

Suspension looks sweet! I did DLC and hard anodized lugs on my 06 and recently picked up a Showa A-kit shock. Will be sending g the shock in to be set up this winter. Killer build!
