2006 KX250 build boyko racing Finished

Edited Date/Time 5/14/2023 6:57pm

I’m rebuilding this 06 for a friend and will likely be done this weekend. The bike is pretty hammered, but we believe it’s the original top end. You can tell it was ridden on the street quite a bit.

Nothing too fancy going on it, but these are the parts so far.
Full flo green plastics.
Tyler keefs national suspension from pro circuit (I rebuilt it a couple years ago and believe there were some aftermarket parts in the forks, shock had a cr250 piston.
Pro circuit linkage.
Pro circuit ti pegs
SR replica graphics.
Possibly some carbon bits.

On with the pics

It’s definitely the oem top end. I didn’t realize how low the hours are. Aside from being neglected and abused, it’s very clean

The build isn’t going to be done this weekend. The cylinder is cracked and the lower end is getting built. Now I have to decide who’s going to do the cylinder and head mods

Man that engine really is a diamond in the rough from the outside!

No real updates yet (busy with work and other bikes) Crank, head, and cylinder are being shipped to boyko racing tomorrow. Its such a shame that the cylinder is cracked, it looks brand new.
The engine is getting the same treatment as the yz250 from boyko, I have a feeling this engine will be faster though.
We are considering sending the original suspension off for setup, any thoughts on who should do it? I was thinking Enzo.
My buddy also added a really nice 07 rm250 to my garage, I’m not sure what the plans are for that yet.

I’d suggest putting on 21.5mm offset triple clamps. While your at it, use forks off a 2019-23 KX450 with Xtrig, Luxon or Ride 21.5mm clamps and front brake/wheel setup.

How is it going with this bike and your Honda?

Teddy should be finishing up with the cylinder head and crank any day now, I told him no rush.

i tinker with the cr pretty often, but I really haven’t had time or been motivated to ride. I’m working 13s right now so most of my spare time has been spent working on other bikes. I recently threw a 10oz ffw on and it made an improvement over the power delivery I was working with. I’m probably sending out a head and cylinder to another tuner here shortly. I love the bike and I really do want to make it really good, or else I have to tell my gf that I lied when I said I could make it better than the new bikes (only doing that if I try to go the brand new route lol)

I have some valving specs for the suspension that were given to me by a member here that should be really good. And I also have a pwk I want to try out eventually.

Man, that cylinder looks so good. Surely there’s a way to repair it.

Man I love the 05-07 KX’s. They will always have a special place in my heart.

Definitely send the suspension to Enzo! These really love race gas, they will detonate with pump fuel. Although, you probably won’t have to worry about that if you’re having some cylinder and head work done.

These things are absolute rocket ships with a very light switch type power in stock form. There is no build up, it’s just on or off lol. Can’t wait to see this one all finished!

I think it’s going to be blast. I’m excited to finally get it finished and out of my garage. My buddy let’s me ride his bikes any time so I’ll probably jet it and send it off with him, then work on his TM 300 next. As far as I know, the RM will only be getting head work, but that can change I’m sure

Which year TM300MX does he has? He has almost all the 2 strokes 😂

do you know which one is his favorite to ride?

I think it’s a 21 or 22. The power is amazing but the suspension doesn’t feel balanced at all, the shock is really stiff. We haven’t messed with it very much yet, I believe I’ll be trying to find suspension settings next week if I have the time. He owns one 450 and probably 12 two strokes. I’ll probably do a build thread with his 95 and 96 cr250s when everything else is done.

id have to say his 15 yz250 is his and my favorite. The boyko modded engine is so good and the suspension is done very well.

You should do a big build thread with all his bikes! Haha

the TM is an interesting bike, I would love to try one sometimes. I like that it’s more unique. I think the suspensions not being setup comes from their production testing being done in such different tracks in Italy.

You can’t go wrong with a YZ250!

We have talked about doing something like that, but I don’t know if it will actually happen. I just got off the phone with him and he said he’s good on buying more bikes unless it’s a really good deal lol.

I think the TM will be amazing once it’s setup, the engine is ridiculous. So much low and mid, and screams up top. It’s stock and probably goes really close to 90mph.

The plan is to finish the kx, then do a restore on the 07 RM. I’ll probably talk him into getting the full boyko treatment on the cylinder and head.

i should have some updates for this kx build in the next week or so

Would that be a direct swap onto the kx frame? Same fork length?

015C56D1-179B-4814-BD07-DAB33CEFE497 Received the cylinder, head, and crank from boyko today. I’ll post a small sneak of teddys work I snapped before work tonight. Should have some updates in the next week 👍

You have to weld a different steering stop to the frame. Not then end of the world, but a bit of work.

Not sure about the newer forks, but 06-08 forks will work with the stock lowers. Just need to change the top clamp. That’s what we did on our 05.

I believe you are correct. I installed newer 4-stroke clamps (top and bottom) onto my '03 125 and had to weld a different steering stop on the frame. I believe a company made an adapter kit at one time that did not require welding.

A couple small updates. I really wish I had more time to finish this bike, I’m excited to ride it. I think with suspension I’m going to just switch over the internals from the pro circuit suspension to the fresh stuff. I serviced it a few years ago and remember there were some goodies in the forks and shock

The jetting might be a little tricky with the cylinder/head mods and rad valve.
original jetting was

main 160

pilot 50

stock needle 2nd clip.

with oxygenated fuel I’m going start pretty rich on the main

main 168

pilot 45

stock needle 3rd clip.

elevation is around 2000 feet and temps will likely be in the 90s by the time I break it in

I have pretty good jetting specs for that bike. I'm not a fan of the OEM needle series(NFxx) on that bike. It just makes the bike hit too hard into the mid and makes the bike harder to ride. I swap it out for a Suzuki NECJ needle, which calms down that hit into the mid, and make the power smoother and easier to use.

Needle---NECJ in clip #3--------NEEDLE, JET (13383-37FE0) | MotoSport

Pilot--45

Main---165/162---using --2t fuel----160 pump fuel

Slide--#8 (oem)

Air screw---1.5

Awesome, I’ll give that a shot. I’m pretty sure I have a couple NECJs left over from my ktm days, that was a great needle in those bikes

I swapped over the valving from keefes bike to the 06 shock and forks. All bearings cleaned and greased.

I swear every time I go to work on this bike I find another small piece missing. As of now I’m waiting on seat bolts, tank strap, and a few spoke nipples, then it will be ready to go.
