Hi there,

Wanted to share the cr250 i bought a few months ago. I'm going to take it apart completely, make everything fresh and do some upgrades.

The way i bought it, it had a strange combination of front plate and fender. Overall not a bad looking bike, nothing bended or broken at first sight. Needs a good clean and some nice parts!

I rode it a few times. The thing I really noticed is the lack of bottom end. It almost rides like a modern 125 with a really strong powerband. Not something I am used to (am riding a Crf250 since 2014) and a 1989 CR500 i just sold. So that's something I need to work on. So i'm planning on buying some lighter sprockets and probably a V-force will help. I do like the suspension and the way it turns, much sharper than my CRF!

So I took the bike apart and noticed the frame cracked at the coil. I need to get that welded.

Meanwhile the first few parts are coming in. I;m ordering a lot from the united states because of price and availability so I have to be patient sometimes.

And this beauty, showa A-kit rear shock (2008).

Will do updates frequently!

I agree. Im going to have to follow this one.

Those motors are known to be lacking in the bottom end. Make sure those power valve cables are tight and the power valve is working properly. Their is a lot be gained/lost there.

This right here.

BTW, I see you're pretty local boardinblunted. You grow up out there?

Haha! Ya man been out here in the desert since I was a kid. I didn’t notice how close you live. I drive right past you almost daily for work. I’m guessing you have driven past me to go riding though huh?

Got the engine out and brought the frame to a welder. Some covers will get coated in the meantime.

Took the reeds out and I was surprised about the worn out state. Luckily my V-force got in, looks like a good replacement.

The front wheel was bended and had a small crack in the rim. Really like my new set of wheels with Pirelli mid-soft tires.

My wallet doesn't Laughing A long way to go though!

Got some new CRF covers for the rear brake, hate those white (yellow) original covers! They bolt on right away.

Also a mishimoto carbon fiber radiator cap which i saw in a other bike build.

Have owned (7) 3rd gen AF CR2's with 2 of them being 06's & 3 being 07's. The 05-07 engines feel similiar to YZ's owned with some fine tuning. They came jetted overly rich from the factory so the throttle response isn't very good with out getting the jetting dialed.
If your not very savy at jetting, a short body 38mm Keihin PWK (for the 05-07's) is much easier to jet & cleans up the low end response nicely. Once jetted with the Keihin the CR engine performs similiar to the YZ, but with more on top.

Got the frame back from the welder! Cleaned up the engine and put it back in. Bought a IMS steel shift lever, wanted to try something different than a aluminum one and really like the look and feel of it.
Also a moose case saver and almost everywhere new bolts.

And these titanium footpegs

Ordered new footpeg brackets and pins to remove the play. Should be as good as new again

Thanks for the info! I know a lot of Cr250 owners are dropping the mikuni for a keihin (probably for good reasons). I will be sticking with the mikuni at first, but depending how it runs with the other sprockets and v-force might switch to keihin. I've read you can't use the TPS on a keihin though..

Not a bad choice. I'm in the minority & prefer the Mikuni over the Keihin due to the performance difference it gives in the mid - top. Tested with a Keihin PWK a few years back & ended up going back to the Mikuni TMX.
BTW - Depending on what type of riding or power characteristic your looking for, the rad valve will slightly boost the low-mid part of the powerband. The Vforce helped the mid-top in comparison to the Boyesen when I did some testing with both intake manifolds in the early 2000's.

What are the part numbers off of those black rear brake plastics pieces? Look way better then the clear/white ones.

The calipers are keramic coated and baked. Ofcourse rebuilded both with a rebuild kit.

Like how it worked out!
The coating feels very hard but I'm not sure how it will hold in the deep sand, we will see!

Really like how it turned out.

Well done mate looks great! The 17/18 model front fender/plate looks way better than the 16 model plastics on the old girl. Keen to know how durable ceramic coating is compared to cerakote or powder coat, keep us updated

Thanks! I did, runs great! Still doesn't have a lot of bottom end but the v-force did make the transition to the power band a lot smoother. It's a bike you have to learn to ride i guess.

Couldn't agree more, fits the bike way better! Also very easy to adapt too! The coating seems to hold pretty well, of course the ignition cover is getting some wear and tear from the boot

The 05-07's in stock form with good jetting are not far off the lowend the YZ250's have. The PC & Dep pipes are more of a mid-topend pipe & will move the power curve a little higher in the rpms. If you have a chance to buy a Doma or HGS I'd highly recommend it. Those are the only pipes I found to outperform the oem ones & will have noticeable gains from off idle to topend / overev. They enhance the powerband even more on a built engine with mods..
