When I was in High School I would drool all over the 89 RM’s when picking up parts for my IT200 at Reading Cycles. Now that I am older, and have some disposable income I have decided not only to start building the bike, but also equipping the shop the way I have always wanted.

For now the shop is restricted to the basement until I can get a garage built in the spring. Once that is done the shop will move into the existing garage.

Starting point

After a bath and the discovery I didn’t see when buying it at night from FB Marketplace

Remove or place some foam over the edge of the bike lift pedal on the lift....your shins will thank me later....the frame dent is no big deal, there are a few options depending on what your end goal is.

Thanks man. I also got this adjustable lift to help stabilize the bike as it comes apart. I have hit my shin once. You are probably correct to say it will happen more often.

Well the cases are split (my first time ever btw). Everything looks good with the exception of a worn cylinder, a small ding in the head, and a heavily corroded magneto.

I found a new magneto on FB. While talking to the guy it turned out he had a non dented 02 frame so I got that too.

Just a few little things to do, a new steering stop and I want to add weld on tabs for a skid plate. So in the spirit of this build I have decided to learn how to weld. 🙂

Where is that stand and the engine stand from? I just use a 2x4 box for and engine stand but that looks pretty slick!

The engine stand is from Motorsports Products and I got it through Rocky Mountain. Its also available on Amazon.

The bike lift is Harbor Freight. The black scissor lift is from Amazon.

It is. Went back and forth between it and the Microhone for a while. Hope to have it running in a week or two and will report on how well it works.

That’s awesome! Feels like it’s taking forever, but it will be so awesome when it’s all done. If things like this are ever truly complete. 🙂

Looks like the cabinet is well worth it by how well those cases clean up. How long did it take for the main case?

I've had luck with removing bolts using pre heat of the rim and a reverse cut drill bit.

The main case would have taken about a half hour if it wasn’t for the heavy corrosion from where the stator went bad. I ended up spending about an hour and a half trying to clean it up. Including breaks.

When I have a parts order come in like that, I I immediately verify all parts are correct & what I ordered, then label each part bag with a sharpie. I then compare new part to old, if it can be done. I also use zip lock plastic bags during teardown to separate sub assemblies. Then just work on each sub assembly at a time, this keeps me organized. With everything labeled and separated I can take a month off and still come back and know right where I was with the build.
