I have been building my 89 cr250 for the last year and a half while racing it at the same time, but now is a good time to post little sneak peeks of what I'm doing since Im out recovering from a dislocated shoulder after crashing and breaking this bike.

Slightly bent subframe and a silencer that mounts no more:

Didn't get pictures of the bars or plastics but they were are also bent or broken.

Sneak peek of its slight upgrade:

I will be making another thread of the full bike build once I'm close to finishing it, this bike will have lots of works parts on it by the time I'm done.

Nice! I just finished my 89 and love it. Did you end up powder coating the frame? What forks are those, pumped on this

The frame was powdercoated early November last year and the forks are Showa sff-tac from a 2016 crf250r

Made a special bracket for the front plate.

But it's ugly looking when the plate sits this far out.

What Smed said - looks like you can happily lift the plate up, and said drilled and tapped hole should be no structural problem at all. You should see the amount of drilled and tapped holes I put into a KTM front end I put on my Honda. Largely for the machined up then bolted on steer stops on the clamp.

Or, Reverse the bracket.

Trim whatever you need to off it so it fits.

You've enough length to the drop, to perhaps put a dog leg in it the put the contact point further back.

A nice bit of aluminium angle would be far nicer, but you know that. Do what you can with the steel (it looks it) bracket, to do the nice aluminium bracket, perfectly.

Even after decades of fabrication / frame making, I'll often do a 'bodge up', with crap materials, to establish a base point for what I Really want out of an item.

Take the plate you have on there and flip it. You would only have to cut notches so there are little tabs that stick out for the bolt to go through.
I know I'm not explaining it very good, sorry.

Thanks for all the replies, drilling and tapping into the top clamp would be the easiest. It's still going to need a small bracket that hangs down for the front plate to bolt up.

It's been fixed and looking good.

Also added some factory HRC shroud decals.

The subframe was slightly bent from my crash, so I unbent it. I also needed a new silencer so I got a 92 cr250 silencer with a stinger tip.

Cool. I have a couple of 88's I am working on. First restoration/modification one is just coming together. One question, did that 92' silencer fit on OK? I was considering a NOS 92 I seen here for sale locally and was not sure if I could make it fit. Great looking bike. Looking forward to see it finished.

The 92 silencer fit on perfectly without modifications. the 89 silencer and 92 had a slight difference with mounting points, the 89 was mounted in front of the rear fender using a large spacer behind it to fill the gap whereas the 92 is behind the fender and mounted dirrectly to the subframe.

If your going to use a NOS 92 silencer I would look at pictures of it side by side with a 92 pro circuit silencer just to make sure they look somewhat the same. From pictures the NOS silencer mounts at a slightly different angle than the pro circuit which may have a different outcome on fitment. If the silencer you found is cheap enough I would go for it, I had no idea a 92 silencer would fit until I stuck it on.

The Muffler that I am looking at buying is a NOS Answer SA2. I need a Spark arrestor to trail ride my bike but was wanting a more period correct looking muffler than a new FMF or Pro Circuit. I am going to give it a try. Worst case scenario I will have to do a little TIG welding to make it fit. Thanks for the info.
Greg

Looking forward to seeing your finished bike. I really love the 88' 89' Honda 250s.

I put 49mm Showa conventionally on my 87 they work great. Just got stiffer springs. Getting them more dialed each ride.

Love the bike! 87 CR125 was the first big bike I ever rode but I was still racing 80’s for another few years and never raced it before selling. I would like to build an 87 CR125 someday but first it will be an 89 or 90 CR125.
