I know someone has done a swap to a newer Shock.

I the middle of doing a swingarm swap and looking at upgrading my shock.

I was told when I bought the bike it had a 09 YZ250F shock? It does have a 18mm shock shaft.

Does anyone know what years fit off either a newer YZ or YZF chassis? Looking at a couple A-kit shocks or a modded KYB

Bike already has a great a-kit fork done by Enzo

Hey man, the YZF shock will work with the ‘04 swingarm or the YZF swingarm.
I can guarantee that 2010-2013 will bolt straight up no problem as that was the year of shock that I used on my ‘04 YZ build.

Any YZ shock from 2005-2020 will fit and if you’re looking at a YZF shock then you’ll need any shock from 2006-2013, all of those will bolt right up.

Obviously if you’re using a YZF shock then you’ll have to have it setup for the YZ and you’ll need to swap the spring collar from your YZ shock onto the YZF shock Smile

I will 2nd what DECCR250 said.

Any 2 stroke YZ125 or YZ250 shock from 2005-2020 will fit no problems.
Any shock from a YZF from 2006-2013 will bolt right up but you’ll need to swap the spring collar from your YZ shock onto the YZF shock when using the later year ones (2009-2013 IIRC...) When Yamaha changed the engine orientation (2014+) that is when the shock also changed & wont work on the 2 strokes. As an added bonus any shock from a YZF from 2006-2008 will have a titanium spring :-)
Just remember have whatever you go with setup for the YZ and you’ll be good to go!

Can confirm. Running a 2009 YZ450 shock on my 2004 YZ125 (04 swingarm).

I am considering buying a 250f shock for my 05 YZ250. Can't seem to find the proper showa kit shock, so trying to build a good KYB SSS and found a 250f one. I am unsure of the year it is from, but I have 2 questions. 1. I read on TT they are a couple mm shorter, is this noticed in form and function? 2. Above mentions swapping the spring collar, and I was just wondering why this is? Sorry if that is a dumb question, perhaps it pertains to an '04 thing?

1. I don’t think so

2. Spring collar, easy swap bc they are different spring collar sizes. See pics below

Why do you need to swap the spring collar? I bolted a 2006 YZ450F shock onto my 2002 YZ250, no swapping of the collars was needed.

It’s so you can run the correct spring on the shock. You won’t be able to run the YZ spring with the YZF collar as the YZF collar is designed for the YZF spring.
If you didn’t change the spring on the shock to the YZ one then that would explain why you didn’t need to change the collar.

This thread is gold

So if you aren’t going to change springs then there is no reason to change the yzf collar to the Yz? No difference in length?
To add another wrench in...what if you have a yzf swimgarm on your yz?

thanks cdoggy81 for the reply and PM. I think I’m tracking. I skipped on my 250f plan as it ended up being 16mm, so my hunt continues. Hopefully I can source a proper Showa and be done with it! ;-)

The YZF shock is shorter than the YZ shock, I think this is because of the different linkage design on the YZF but I could be wrong.
When I fitted the 2 piece YZF shock to my steel frame YZ it lowered the rear ever so slightly.
Can’t comment on the YZF swingarm change though as I’ve never done it.

Little side by side comparison. YZF left, YZ right

Pretty much the same but different spring height on body
