Results Sheet: Southwick 2011 1

Ryan Dungey grabs the holeshot in moto one.

While Hurricane Irene was on the minds of the riders and crews, and Massachusetts and surrounding states had already declared a state of emergency, a surprisingly large number of hearty moto fans came out to check out the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship action at Motocross 338 in Southwick, MA. Yep, the weather did deteriorate throughout the day, with rain off and on, but it wasn't the worst conditions we've ever seen, and it made for some great racing.

Brett Metcalfe.

In the 450 class, Brett Metcalfe (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) scored his first overall win here in the U.S. with a 3-2 score. Yep, Brett felt like Southwick owed him one after running out of gas while leading last year, and this time around he was taking advantage of the misfortune of other riders, as well as also putting in an excellent ride.

Ryan Villopoto.

Ryan Dungey took the first moto win, but when the call came for the second moto, his Rockstar Makita Suzuki crew was working feverishly to try and get his RM-Z450 to fire up. By the time it was back together and running, the gate had already dropped and Ryan was nearly a lap down. He charged back to an impressive seventh place finish, and despite the problem, only lost one point in the title chase to Ryan Villopoto (Monster Energy Kawasaki), who had finished second in the first moto, and fourth in moto two.

Meanwhile, Metcalfe had pushed hard and passed Villopoto in moto two, knowing that a 3-2 tally would give him the overall win. Villopoto (2-4) was second overall, and Dungey still made the podium, with his 1-7 score.

Tyla Rattray.

Tyla Rattray (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) had taken the win at overall win the last time the series visited Southwick, and was leading early in moto one with Gareth Swanepoel (DNA Shred Stix / Star Racing / Yamaha) in tow. A small problem with a stall allowed Swanepoel to get by and score the moto win, which also broke Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki's moto win streak at 18.

Gareth Swanepoel.

Rattray came back to win moto two and grab the oveall again, while series points leader Dean Wilson (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) was pretty happy with a second overall (3-2) on a track that he said he doesn't really gel with. Swanepoel rounded out the podium with a 1-5 score. Dean has a pretty comfy 38-point lead in the title chase with four motos to go.

Dean Wilson.

Notable? Alex Martin (Eleven10 Mods/Renegade Fuels) holeshot the second moto and led for three laps before being overtaken by Rattray. He finished fourth overall for the day, with a tenth and a third.

Ashley Fiolek.

In WMX Action, the top two riders (Ashley Fiolek and Jessica Patterson) were both returning from injuries at the X Games. Fiolek (American Honda Racing) continued her string of holeshots, jumping out front early in the first moto and never looking back. If she had, she'd have seen her closest pursuer in the title chase, Jessica Patterson (DNA Shred Stix / Star Racing / Yamaha) go down twice, and have a lot of trouble restarting her bike. The 27th-place finish in moto one for Patterson put a serious crimp in her championship hopes. While she did come back to win moto two, with just four motos left, she's now 30 points back of Fiolek, who took the overall win on the day. Tarah Gieger (Troy Lee Designs / Lucas Oil / Honda) was second with a 2-5 day, and Alexa Pearson (KTM) scored her first podium, with a seventh and a third.
