MXoN Moto 3 (MX1/Open Combined)

The final moto of the day, the combined MX1 and Open race, lined up to nearly perfect conditions. After overnight rain moistened things up, the track was surprisingly good, and the track crews spent quite a bit of time between motos working it. While rutted, it was in surprisingly good shape thanks to the composition of the track surface itself, as well as the work of the track crew.

Italian David Philippaerts led the way at the start of the second moto, along with Billy Mackenzie (13), Josh Coppins (10), and Steve Ramon (9). Both James Stewart (1) and Stefan Everts (7) were close behind the lead quartet.

Stefan Everts (7) was in fourth spot on the first lap, and picked off a rider on each successive circuit. He took over the lead for good on lap 7. After 101 GP wins, and ten world titles, a pair of wins in the GP season's biggest event was a nice capper. He also had the fastest lap (a 2:06.369) in the final moto on his 14th lap.

James Stewart finished in second for the moto and second overall in MX1, but was atop the podium with his U.S. teammates. We don't want to downplay Stefan's performance, which was amazing, but the James that raced on Sunday bore little resemblance to the one that went head-to-head with Ricky Carmichael throughout '06.

Ivan Tedesco gave it everything he had all weekend, and though he did suffer from some arm pump, he came through with great starts and solid performances...exactly what Team USA needed to take the overall.
