Team Belgium's Stefan Everts won the first moto of the 2006 Motocross of Nations (the combined MX1/MX2 classes) with an 11-second lead ahead of Team USA's James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto.

Stefan grabbed the holeshot and was being hotly pursued by James Stewart. Ryan Villopoto had lined up on the inside lane, but was pulled by Ben Townley. A few laps into the race and it was Townley, Billy Mackenzie, Villopoto, and Antii Pyrhonen.

On lap two, James lost the front end in a hairpin while attempting to go inside the multi-time MX1 champion Everts, and dropped to the edge of the top ten. He charged back to second by the end of the moto. Villopoto held second after he broke free from Townley and Pourcel, and was finally caught by James with less than a handful of laps to go.

With their 2-3 moto scores, Team USA jumped into the lead in the standings with a 2-3 score to New Zealand's 5-6, and Belgium's 11-11.
