While it wasn’t as brutally hot and humid as it was last season, Freestone County Raceway in Wortham, Texas, once again proved to be a major challenge for the riders of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
In the 450 class, it was Mike Alessi (Rockstar Makita Suzuki), taking a pair of moto wins and extending his points lead to 31 over his teammate, Chad Reed, who was third overall on the day. Andrew Short (Honda Red Bull Racing) scored a podium spot courtesy of his 2-3 moto finishes, continuing his string of solid finishes on the loose terrain of the Texas track.
Among the riders who turned in surprise performances? Ricky Dietrich, who went 7-6 for fifth overall, in a replacement role at Monster Energy Kawasaki. Dan Reardon was also showing some speed that we haven’t seen from him since he arrived here, and his 12-4 isn’t completely indicative of how he should have finished. He was running strongly in moto one until a crash very late in the moto.
As usual, the 250 class provided plenty of fireworks, and this time around it was battles between Trey Canard (Geico Powersports Honda) and eventual overall winner Ryan Dungey (Rockstar Makita Suzuki); as well as battles between Tommy Searle (Muscle Milk MDK KTM), Tyla Rattray (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki), and Brett Metcalfe (Geico Powersports Honda).
First moto winner Christophe Pourcel (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) finished the day with a 1-4 score, and this time around he was edged out by Dungey’s 2-1…but only six points separate the two riders, and it’d be even closer, except for Pourcel’s penalty at Hangtown for jumping in a zone where the “no jump” flag was being displayed. (The colors and design for that flag was new here, by the way.)
In the Women’s class, there was a spirited battle for the lead between Jessica Patterson and Ashley Fiolek (Honda Red Bull Racing) in the first moto. Both riders led at one point, and it looked like JP might take her second-straight moto win, but a last-second charge by Fiolek gave her the nod. Ashley also took the overall for the day.
Behind the lead duo, there were plenty of other battles. Series rookies Sara Price and Vicki Golden both had solid rides, though each had their issues (a tweaked wrist for Golden, and a misfiring bike for Price in moto one).
There’s plenty more info in the 57-photo gallery of images from Freestone, so dig in.
Also, be sure to check back next week for more, as the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship series moves to High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, PA.
