First Look: GoPro Hero Camera 2

Last weekend Josh Hill showed up with a very unusual helmet cam setup on top of his Thor helmet, and many people were wondering exactly what the deal was. It’s a relatively inexpensive (around $179) GoPro Hero camera that records to an SD memory card. GoPro is a new team sponsor with Yamaha Factory Racing, and by using a memory card rather than tape, that means there are no dropouts due to the videotape bouncing around as it records. According to GoPro’s web site, you can get 56 minutes of recording time from an optional 2GB memory card.

We were curious how the footage would look, and as promised, Yamaha loaded up some video from Josh’s win on Saturday night, which you can check out here.

While the mounting looks a tad awkward, and we watched Josh working to get the goggle strap over the top of the camera, he said he couldn’t feel it while it up there while riding. It’s also hard to argue with the results. The footage looks pretty darn good.
