The first moto of the 2008 AMA/WMA Women’s National Motocross Championship Presented by Kawasaki was run on Saturday afternoon in Hangtown, and for a while it looked like the moto that no one wanted to win.

Jessica Patterson grabbed the holeshot, and started to pull away from the field. But behind her, a couple other favorites, Ashley Fiolek and Tarah Gieger, were dealing with crashes.

Patterson then had problems of her own in a deeply rutted corner, and handed the lead to Tatum Sik. Next to take the lead was Sarah Whitmore…but behind her was a hard-charging Ashley Fiolek, who had worked her way from 23rd to first when she went by Whitmore.
