2008 Monster Energy Supercross: Phoenix Photo Gallery and Results

After a muddy first race at Anaheim 1, there were plenty of questions yet to be answered at round two in Phoenix. Who has the speed on a dry track (and not one that has the consistency of a greased mogul field? Whose bikes have an advantage? Whose training programs are working (and whose aren’t?)

Welcome to A(Z)1.

In Lites class racing, Torco Racing Fuels Honda’s Jake Weimer crashed at Anaheim last weekend, separating his shoulder, and failing to make the main. This week? He won it, after a spectacular battle with last week’s winner, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey…and that was only decided in the last four laps of the main. Before that, it was Dungey and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Broc Hepler who were duking it out for the top spot. A mistake by Hepler allowed Weimer to take over the lead, and he was more than ready to do battle over the final few laps to take the win.

After a crash and a 19th place finish to open the season at Anaheim, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Brett Metcalfe grabbed the final podium spot. Yep, the Lites West series really is the wild, wild west. Maybe we should give them a new slogan, something catchy like, “Supercross, come for the Lites racing, and stay for the Supercross main.”

Speaking of the Supercross main, following a first turn crash at Anaheim last week, and a stellar charge back though the pack to an eventual second place finish, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart kept it on two wheels in Phoenix, but he wasn’t alone. L&M Racing / San Manuel Band of Mission Indians / Yamaha’s Chad Reed provided plenty of pressure. The speedy Australian (who was the winner of last week’s race in Anaheim) briefly went into the lead before Stewart got back by and gradually pulled away.

Stewart and Reed are now tied atop the championship point standings, with 47 points apiece.

There was plenty of action in Phoenix, so check the link to our photo gallery above for much more from the Monster Energy Supercross at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ.

Next week the series moves back to Anaheim stadium, for round three of the series. Will we see you there?
