The wildest moment to date in the ’08 Monster Energy Supercross season didn’t even happen on the track. It was when James Stewart called a press conference after practice to let everyone know that he’d been dealing with a knee injury, and would be seeking a fix for it…meaning that his Supercross title defense (and probably a large chunk of his outdoor season) was over.

That had barely sunk in when it was time for opening ceremonies. With the throwback night planned, it was cool to see Rick Johnson and David Bailey make a lap around the exterior of the track at Angel Stadium. David was aboard Ricky James’ Honda 450, and RJ aboard a KTM. There was also a pre-race lap by Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath, and it’s always cool seeing them on dirt again.

Once the actual racing got underway, it was Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and Boost Mobile Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence taking the heat race wins in the Lites classes, while Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps and Kevin Windham (Torco Racing Fuels Honda) took the Supercross qualifiers.

In the Lites main event, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Austin Stroupe grabbed the holeshot, before giving way to Ryan Dungey a third of the way through the main. Broc Hepler (Yamaha Factory Racing) also got by Stroupe to grab second spot.

Jason Lawrence (Boost Mobile Yamaha of Troy) had trailed Dungey by only nine points after Phoenix, and was running in third spot early in the main, but troubles re-firing his bike after a stall dropped him to near the bottom of the standings. Dungey now has a 22-point lead after three rounds.

In the Supercross main event, Mike Alessi (Rockstar Makita Suzuki) grabbed another holeshot, but Chad Reed (L&M Racing / San Manuel Band of Mission Indians / Yamaha) quickly took over the lead and checked out. Josh Hill (Yamaha Factory Racing) and Kevin Windham also made their way past Alessi, grabbing the other two podium spots. Reed now has a 16-point lead over Windham.
