2007 WMA National MX Championship: Steel City

Jessica Patterson wrapped up her fifth WMA title in the first moto on Sunday at Steel City. Her third-place finish behind Sarah Whitmore and Vanessa Florentino, combined with multiple crashes by her closest pursuer, Tarah Gieger, locked it up with one moto remaining. It was lucky for her that the moto wasn't longer than it was, as mud built up on the bike had a steady stream of steam coming from the powerplant early in the moto, and it refused to start afterward.

Sarah Whitmore took the overall for the day with a 1-2 score, easily her best finishes of the season. She was clearly ecstatic after the pair of solid motos which couldn't have been run in more different conditions. Their first moto was the first on a track that had been soaked by overnight rain, and the second was on a much harder surface that had been abused all day long by the AMA Pros.

There were plenty of eyes on Ashley Fiolek, who was making her Pro debut, and she turned in a very respectable 6-3 score on a very stout 125 Honda that was still at a disadvantage against the 250Fs preferred by the rest of the WMA competitors. Subtract a couple crashes from the day, and she'd have likely finished much higher than her fifth-place overall.
