73 honda cr 250m

Have a question about a bottom end I purchased off a guy. He said its a 73 honda cr 250m, but there is no serial number on the motor, but it does have a billet crank. He said early ones didn't have serial numbers. There are numbers on the inside case which both match.  Anybody know if what he said "holds any water" ? Thanks, Lee
