You have a D series( 1.45 deg taper) single taper needle with and E----L-1 (clip height) and a K--starting diameter. I think it's a fairly standard needle that comes in aftermarket Keihin carbs. I would say the main is 2 sizes to small for that (DEK) ... more »

I've used Keihin single taper needles in a lot of small bore bikes, and I haven't noticed any unusual detonation in stock engines or engines that were setup to run pump fuel. My main small bore needle, a Honda 685/289 or 294 triple taper needle, is no ... more »

I agree. It looks like a typical cast piston failure that was caused by detonation.

The one I setup, I used a CCL single taper needle, in the #3 clip, with a 48 pilot and 185 main. Set the air screw at 1.5 turns out to start out.

Red Moto out of Italy makes a 300cc big bore for the current 18'-20' Honda crf 250's. They also make a 400cc kit for the 17'-20' 450's. Both kits are said to be very good.

The needle is the most important tuning aspect of the carb, everything gets tuned around it. I would like to know what needle you are using to determine if the main jet was to small for it, and possibly lead to the topend failure.

With or without the STIC ?

What needle ? I have setup a few using a CCL needle in the 3rd or 4th clip position, a 50 or 52 pilot jet, with a 185/ 188 main. That's with using the #7 slide.

Sure, I've setup a few. For what bike, and what are your current jetting specs?

There is a bunch of overlap between those 2 tuning devises, but i would suspect that the needle jet would play a stronger roll than the leaner diameter needle. I never tried that route on the current KTM's.

Here is the Suzuki part# for a #5 Mikuni slide, If you can't source one independently. https://www.partzilla.com/product/suzuki/13551-36F50?ref=cf3fd997ae8f8e3931dae1a185737f6e86a9bbc2

Why do they need the exact dimension? There are 2 versions of that tmx-x , but the Oem KTM Mikuni is able to use both versions. The Mikuni equipped TMX-x with TPI slides are a slightly different version. They have a semi filled port to allow the tpi ... more »

That’s the one you need.

The slides that are in the pics, are for a Mikuni TMX-x carb, and are what you need. The bottom pic is of an oem #4 slide, exactly like the one you have in your bike now.

The slide pictured on JD's website is the correct slide for a Mikuni TMX-x carb( the slide you need) . A Mikuni TMX-x slide will only work in a Mikuni TMX-x carb. JD's slides will only work in non TPS Mikuni's, which with your KTM, you don't have to ... more »

I dykem blue the back side of the slide where I will be cutting, so that I can see the etched line. I then etch the amount I need to take off around the full arch, 1mm to go from an OEM 4.0 to a 5.0, or 1.5mm to go from 4.0 to a 5.5 etc , into the slide ... more »

I have them setup with a 490 main. Make sure you use Mikuni brand mains only. The quality of the aftermarket mains above 490 varies wildly. I have seen 520 aftermarket mains that ran leaner than 490’s. Just be advised.

Yes, if you cut and notch your oem slide you will only need the jet block gasket kit from JD. That setup has been used from 60f to 90f with slight air screw adjustments only. Sea level to 2000’
