Started new thread Old school early 90’s chest protector FS. 7/26/2020 6:05 PM

I recently dug up an old Answer chest protector I got in the early 90’s. It’s in good shape, just needs a good scrub. The elastic is still elastic, and everything is intact and usable. Not sure what it’s worth, but thinking $100 is a good starting point.

Yep, you’re totally correct. Cast aluminum often has quite a bit of magnesium, zinc, and other metals. They react differently depending on the concentration of alloying elements. It’s also why welding some cast aluminum parts works really well, and other ... more »

Piston position has no influence on this. Also, it’s a coincidence that it won’t start, nothing with the powervalve will keep it from running. What manual are you referencing? I might be able to send you a few pics from my Honda service manual tomorrow ... more »

I would second Matt Fisher here. The aluminum brightener is an acid formula that removes the surface oxides on the aluminum parts. But.. it’s not a degreaser or cleaner. It needs to be able to interact with the aluminum/aluminum oxide itself. If the ... more »

MaxPower, that’s quite an improvement in the pictures. I used to use the aluminum brightener acid sold by Napa when I did a lot of aluminum welding. It worked well too, you just had to be careful with it, and be sure to rinse it off thoroughly, not letting ... more »

No, that switch was made for 89. 88 still had the borable sleeve.

That’s great information. I’ve been looking for some information on this subject. I recently bought a spare cylinder and head, supposed to be from an 87, but I’d like to maybe use it on my 88. I’ve been trying to determine what year the cylinder is. ... more »

I rode my first dual carb Honda recently, an 86 XL600R. It’s funny, you twist the throttle until it feels like you’re full throttle when the throttle hits resistance, then twist a little harder, and there’s another half throttle to go! It took a little ... more »

Did you get your cable routing sorted out? If not, my friend has the OEM service manual if you need a picture of that page.

Sorry to say, but no. Life has been very busy, and I haven’t gotten any further on them. I hope to soon, but that’s about it. I’m open to suggestions on reputable companies to duplicate them. They’re silkscreened onto really heavy mil clear plastic with ... more »

Not easy finding the parts, but the final result is rewarding. As for the stickers, it’s your bike, and no matter what you do some will like it and some won’t, so do what you think looks good. Like Ledger said, you can’t please everyone, so please yourself! ... more »

What kind of premix and ratio are you running, and what kind of riding? I ride woods and tight single track on my 88 CR125 which is essentially identical in the engine department, and have no issues. I’ve always run Maxima Castor 927 at 40:1. I don’t ... more »

My recently acquired 96 XR400R. Someone installed a later model red tank on it, so I went ahead with matching fenders. This one has a street legal title, so it was hard to pass up. I’m working on adding street equipment now. I wish I had a better picture,
