Pat Hanlon asked me to post this. I didn't know Harry personally, but many of you did. Godspeed Mr. West. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/san-angelo-tx/harry-west-7968695

Bob, way cool. Thanks for posting. Keep the photos coming. Since you're from Cruces, was Stahman's around back when?

Chris, thanks for posting. Good to hear from another Borderland alumni. It was a wonderful track. Like you, I got whacked with the surgical rubber band at the bottom of the downhill start. I don't think I knew what hit me. It probably made me gas the ... more »

I remember Casner Range well. That was our go to spot. Used to be able to hop on the side roads from the top of Hondo Pass, cut across the dam, ride along the freeway to Trans Mountain and then haul rear end down the dirt trail beside Trans Mountain. ... more »

If anybody wants to look at the old riding area, go to Google Maps and type in Santa Teresa High School, Santa Teresa NM. Directly across McNutt Rd. you will see Borderland (if you are in satellite view). You can make out Horseshoe back toward the meat ... more »

Never did race Tularosa. Good track? New Mexico tracks that I can remember riding were Stahman Farms in Las Cruces, Carlsbad, Truth or Consequences and La Luz outside of Alamagordo.

Anyone remember Arvol Brumley? I had lunch with him on one of my trips to El Paso. He still looks the same and is still driving school buses for the Ysleta School District.

This is Borderland. Was on Westside Road, between Borderland Road and Country Club Road.

Looking up the hillside from the infield. A house is built right at the top of Suicide.

Looking back toward Horseshoe. That is a big meat packing plant on top now.

View of track from top of Horseshoe looking back toward the three hills (Suicide and whatever we called hill 2 and 3). All grown up in salt cedar. Homes on top where the pits used to be. I still found old sparkplugs in the dirt.

Corner of Borderland and McNutt. How many times did I drive this road? A bunch.

Me on my '74-'75? MX 100 off the infield jump on the way to the third hill turn. My dad's lineman boots and a Kenny Roberts helmet. Styling! Tracy Kamahiku is behind me.

Some names you all might remember. Sean Perrero (#1) with Maby McIntyre (#56) behind him. Scott Logston (#89), Carlos Serrano (#844) and Steve LaPointe (wheelying)

Stahman was my first ambulance ride. I endoed into one of the dunes in the back. Hurt my back and think I had heat exhaustion (good ol summer heat) and got a ride to Cruces in the back of the bus. Shared the emergency room with Scott Logston who I think blew his knee out. I remember my pop buying me Annie Davis' ported 100 Yammer (white tank). It also screamed. It was the only bike I owned that had any top end work. Broken clavicle. Ouch. I guess you've got the bump to show for it. My knees are shot. I'm too young for knee replacement, so have to make due until I an old fart. You're right about the fast front straight. There were a few high speed areas over there. I always seemed to crash down in the bottom after that downhill that fed into the straight that ran in front of the spectators. Sandy as heck and I always floundered like a fish.

Woops, for the record I finished behind Alain Kameser on Penton, not Larry Armendariz, in the 250 class at Stahman farms in January 1977.

Mayby and his dad sold me a DG radial head, high exhaust pipe, ported cylinder, and 34 mm mikuni carb for my yz125c. That bike screamed till I seized the bottom end bearings.
Now that I think about it, I went over the bars of a yz250x at Stahman farms in 1976....broke my clavicle. That track had a pretty fast front straight away. Sorry about your knee. Hope it's ok now.
