I think Adams result at MEC got downplayed a bit too far here in this article; while the "entire field" wasn't there, he still straight up beat the guy who has been heads up the fastest guy on the track season after season. As we saw again on Saturday, Eli makes mistakes going that speed

(which also made no sense why Adam got harped on for a mistake and not Eli when Eli is a veteran of the class and Adam washed the front end while leading his first 450 race)

But aside from that, if he beat the fastest guy, who 90% of the time is faster than everyone else in the series, speed for speed; that's a BIG statement.

Now the consistency piece will come into play in both of their camps but Adam beat the fastest dude in supercross and had a more consistent overall score across 3 races.

Not blaming the track, just saying it’s time to adjust. You guys have been very in tune with safety, probably the best of any promoters. With that said, I believe it’s time to slow them again.

Cooksey I think you nailed it here; what he is trying to say and explain to everyone up in arms and throwing a fit is that this race is a one off exhibition event for fun, this event and the current star power that it pulls will only continue if they find a way to limit the risk as much as possible. This isn't the supercross championship and it isn't the outdoor championship; If big name stars continue, or start getting hurt more regularly at this event, the team managers are going to pull their riders from participating. He didn't say "take the whoops out" he said move them, or put them in a different section where guys aren't hitting them 3rd/4th gear wide open in a dead sprint right into a jump face..

Max Vholand is a future super star and his career could have been over last weekend because of an event that in the grand scheme of his career never will net him anything. If the fans and media want to continue having and being able to enjoy this event they do need to slow it down, whether that means making it more technical, adding more whoops, harder rhythms etc it doesn't matter but the overall speed is getting way too high in terms of the continuous momentum through out the run where if something does go wrong people are going to start getting seriously injured.

Thanks for reading, I don’t agree with any of that but to each their own. I like the entertainment of guys expressing themselves both on and off track.

Appreciate the write up and interesting insights as always, Cooksey. Usually i like to throw a counterpoint at you but you’re not giving me much to work with as all your points are firmly grounded in reason. If anything, I’d say it’s a tad early in my book to declare the preverbial torch...more

Crowning Webb the new prodigal son of the 450 class is a bit excessive and extreme to say the least. How many times have riders in the past gone on a tear? Anything can happen in the blink of an eye and he is far too young in the class to think he isn't also going to be subjected to this whether its an injury, or personal mistake. Tomac has left people in the dust for 8 weeks in a row in years past and his mistakes still cost him the title. Webb is on a roll right now, no question, but there is so many other things at play for him to win this championship.

NOT taking anything away from his ride in Dallas, that was genuinely incredible. But that was one night, he has to be able to continue to ride with THAT level of dominance WITHOUT making mistakes and WITHOUT getting injured. Thats a big ask that we haven't seen since Villo with that combination of dominant speed and championship consistency.

Completely agree with all of your points here Cooks! I think the obsessive amateur development needs to be at the least, reigned in and at best reconsidered altogether. Motocross is the only sport in the world that has what is overall probably the highest risk of injury, coupled with the shortest term thinking/contracts from the manufacturers. So many careers have been derailed or ended altogether by this exact problem created by a lack of time to develop which often leads to the younger riders pushing to speeds well above their current level of skill and then repeating the same injury process to try and "prove" themselves before their window is gone.

A different system definitely needs to be implemented that will allow better longevity and times of development for riders all the way around.

I had Barcia pegged for winning A1 so partially yes, did I think Baggett would’ve been the other winner? No I didn’t predict it would be him specifically but the first 1-5 rounds are also usually somewhat of a crap shot.

Tomac usually doesn’t come on strong until after Dallas, Musquin is nursing the knee injury, and Anderson the wrist so I didn’t predict any of them having wins yet and while Roczen is my favorite rider I’m happy he is starting slower and consistent. Baggett getting a win isn’t unheard of he has knocked on the door in years prior so again, not talking down I just haven’t found any of it to be that confusing. It’s not like Jo Blow 376 is out here stomping podiums out of no where.

I don't really feel like the season has been that confusing;

Barcia winning A1, he's an aggressive rider and has always done well in the mud. Some of the front runners had issues early, he capitalized and rode great.

Anderson is clearly nursing a late off season injury and trying to ride himself back into shape, he will be back in the next few rounds and a title threat for the long run.

Baggett win was a fluke, he won't have another one this season. Just like his outside wall pass in Colorado against Tomac he has flashes of freak speed but won't back it up.

Roczen is doing exactly what he needs to do, staying consistent, showing speed and running up front when he can.

Tomac is being Tomac, his A1 ride back to a late podium was very impressive. He randomly has off nights or weird "slow down" moments and this is why he hasn't won the title in recent years. However, if on his off nights he can continue to get 3rds and 4ths we know he has the speed to leave people in the dust at a few rounds and he could end up wrapping this thing up without a big crash.

I think a lot of the riders in the US are in for a rude awakening for how much faster TC has gotten over seas. Osborne was getting worked before he went to Europe, did his seasons there, and besides the injury this year he has been undefeated in titles since his return. SX will still be a learning curve for him but ill stamp a top 5 championship indoor finish and title contender outdoors.

Thomas Covington is going to make a lot of riders look foolish in '19, I am happy that he is here in the States, but will miss him in Europe. Go get 'em Thomas!
