For someone who wants an old school full-sized XR-style trail bike with some modern conveniences, Kawi has brought back the KLX300R but with EFI, e-start and updated ergos. And it's realtivey low-priced, as you would want for that type of bike.

It may be the case that if you can expand your budget by 1500 and you may be edging into the category of later model, lower hours bikes. Like your friends said (and they give fair advice), you will spend that anyways.

As a KDX owner, I'll note that they have been out of production for 15 years, and certain new OEM parts are no longer available, an issue that will only expand. They are a fun, reliable, and easy to ride trail bike that you can still push to race-level ... more »

Obviously the biggest corner cut is that they are not providing the Showa set that the base comes with, which itself retails for over $4k

The Rickman is more of just a racer, not a show queen. It is nervous handling and has an awful gearbox. However, it turns great, makes good power (albeit over a very narrow range), and Rickman build quality and attention to detail was top-notch

Zundapp motor ported to the specification that came with it in a 3 ring binder "Rickman competition performance tuning addendum." Also came with a few extra neutrals free-of-charge.
