You guys are missing the fact that Blake is still only 18yo. He's small, and he'll get faster as his body matures and he becomes stronger. Look at Jeff Ward. He didn't win his first National until he was 20. The Geico team has to be happy with the amount ... more »

Get a YZ250. It's a better bike anyway. You can get this new '10 for $5775 otd in Minnesota right now. LINK

That's the problem. We asked for champagne works bikes but we are on a beer budget. Less complex bikes are the future, if there is going to be a future.

A DID 520VT2 chain and a set of MSR/Ironman sprockets will last longer than the rest of the bike. It's a $200 setup but you will actually save money in the long run because they last so long. You'll use half as much chain lube and only tightening your ... more »

I'm planning to make it down to Rio for the Marty Tripes Vintage Days races in November.

Agreed, there has to be a full size race bike that passes the lawn mower test. What's the lawn mower test? It's a new bike that any high school kid can buy with the money he made mowing lawns for one summer. 125's use to pass the test. Current 250F's ... more »

Added reply in a thread Race fuel seized up my bike??? 7/14/2010 1:14 PM

I've been buying it for 30 years and I've never been told I can't fill up my fuel jug. The only restriction I know of is you can't use it on the street. Most muni airports have self serve pumps with no attendants.

Sounds like James wants to race the MXoN's.

A 125 might be competitive at a national if it's stroked and poked to a 175.

Added reply in a thread MXA and VP Race Fuel U4.4 "test"... 7/12/2010 3:56 PM

Yep, it works well in both 2T and 4T. Throttle response is good. The small shot of lead is good for thumper valves and allows a little more compression. 2T's always like lead, especially mod engines. 100LL contains no ethanol, which reduces corrosion ... more »

I've used a lot of different fuels and, if you are on a champagne budget, the VP stuff is the best. I'm poor so I run 100LL Avgas.

If the dealers sold a new trimmed down 150 2T for $3,500, most people wouldn't need a bank loan. A kid can save that much cash mowing lawns for a summer.

That's really the whole point of the thread. The solution is stepping backwards a few steps. Here's a start. Create a new class for a 150cc 2T and pen rules that require the use of steel frames only, engines with no powervalves, no trick tranny controlled ... more »

Actually, gasoline costs about the same today as it did in 1983, adjusted for inflation.

Not comparing bike prices to inflation, then wondering why dealers sell 80% fewer dirt bikes than they did 30 years ago is asinine. In 1980 there were 226 million people in the US. Today there are 308 million. The population has increased 36% and the ... more »

Added reply in a thread $1595 for brand new 1983 CR125 7/12/2010 10:29 AM

Honda sold a hell of a lot more '83 CR125's than 2009 CRF250's. Back then, almost 1 million dirt bikes were sold every year. Today it's around 200,000. That's a major part of why we don't see nationals with 40,000 spectators today. This is a participation ... more »

The health of the sport is defined by new dirt bike sales. It doesn't have anything to do with what's happening on the professional level, even if it was on TV every day. If fewer people are buying fewer bikes, the sport is shrinking.
