The frames are nearly identical. The ‘88 has gussets at the swingarm pivot that the ‘87 does not. You can just make out the gusset behind the brake pedal return spring. ‘88 pictured.

Did you finish assembling this bike?

The fit-up probably didn't look that good from Yamaha when it was new. Considering what it looked like when you bought it, that looks great!

I found the video. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try this on my next build/restore. Always good to learn a new technique.

Great build. Keep up the good work! Can you elaborate on the “torch method “. The results look fantastic.

What year YZ frame is in the background? Spare parts for this bike or another build?

I'm a fan of your bike builds. One of my favorite bikes from that era. The oem color combo screams early 90's! It is very rewarding bringing these old bikes back. Fixing everyone else's "fix" and doing it the right way. Keep up the good work.

That’s disappointing. Thanks for your response. This forum is a great source of information.

1987 CR125 & 1988 CR125 compatibility . Can I run a 1988 CR125 engine (cases, crank, piston & rings) with a 1987 CR125 cylinder & head??? I think the only major difference Honda made to the ’88 was increasing the wrist pin bearing size. 1988 ... more »

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, mine is loose on the ignition side. I'll contact CrankWorks and see what they can do.

I’ve never had this issue with a crank before. I’m able to push the crank bearing on with my hand. Is there anyway to fix this or is the crank half ruined? This is out of a ‘79 CR250. So it has some age to it.

I had a run away situation on a recent build. Luckily I was able to pull the clutch in and kill the motor. It wasn't as bad as the horror stories I've read. I did learn a valuable lesson though. Always check the intake boot on 25+ year old bike. I cleaned

That is one minty-looking clutch basket!!! Wow that looks like new. The clutch cover even looks great. Most old KX's have a dent/crack, leaking oil in that same spot. It hard to avoid with their design and only gets worse as the pedal bushing wears. ... more »

Cool story. As a kid I would have wanted to keep it to! Ha ha I had a 1980 CR125 back in the early ‘80’s. It was a fun bike but I remember the air box being a pain to get into. Your RM is sweet! Doesn’t look like you have much left to finish.

I race some of the American Classic Racing (www.acrmx.com) events. I try to race a few events each year but I don't follow the full series. Central Village is close to me and Southwick is always a good event. I love reading the 80's bike builds on Vital. ... more »

Thanks! In the end it was worth it. Always a few hiccups with a 30-40 year old builds. I does make it more satisfying. Post up your ‘82 CR build. That was the DeCoster era at Honda. Yours is the first year their bikes really started coming together in ... more »

My seat pan doesn’t go up the tank either. You can see in this photo only the foam and cover extend up the tank.

My oil plug is plastic. Maybe it was changed at some point to a later model? Good luck with your build. Post it on Vital! ... more »
