So the block miraculously wasn’t hurt, cranks is fine, cam has one burr in it that can be polished, heads didn’t even didn’t even get touched, two lifters need replaced, as soon as it let go I locked up the brakes, I have a loaner motor I can use until I get my custom pistons here as my setup doesn’t work with any shelf pistons, got lucky

Thats good the heads made it,  thats why I thought it hydraulic'd.   Usually when the piston tops are fine and the heads are good but rods are bent/broke,,  its a due to hydraulic lock.

Getting that Winters rear to work is gonna be a trick,  those threads are pulled.   Dunno if a helicoil will work on that one.

PS - that wrist pin is gnarly AF.   That spiral lock aint coming out without a fight !  😆

You got some nice conversation pieces right there for later on in life.

I noticed that too. I might try oversizing the studs before I went with a Helicoil. Might even be a metric thread that's the next best size. (Don't kill me for that, I hate mix and match too)

I had a Winters that had flange issues and could not get the drive line to not bind.  After putting it in and out many times (which is a pain lemme tell you - it was an old one with a steel axle,  ugh ) I said F-it and called Smileys and bought a Winters Pro Eliminator with a DMI driveline.   After some looking it appears they havent gone up in the past 20 years.

One of the things I like about sprint car racing is the chassis set up so as soon as they back off the gas it pitches it into the slide.

Car racing setup has always been interesting.

When looking at the “edge distance” from the new oversized “torn” hole size and the minimal material left to work with…

The housing needs to be replaced.

That thing takes some serious loads…that’s judging by how the part was affected by this incident.

I know, I know…but…Don’t shoot the messenger! 🤣

I looked again, and that's why I said metric might be good, minimal oversized.

Anyway, is there another set of holes between the stripped ones? Kinda looks like it.

Replace the center section, if not the entire rear. I don't know how the axel wouldn't be compromised with that big of a bang.

Just sucks.

Loaner engine in the bed of my uncles truck currently 👍 rear end is being repaired, so there’s two sets of holes and it’s kinda the norm for those to rip out instead of destroying the rear end, so you end up having six shots at a rear end housing, original threads, helicoil, time sert, then repeat on the secondary set of holes. So we have four shots left with this rear end housing

Engler injectors,  nice.    Good luck getting stuff back together.   Lots squaring and heim twisting ahead of you.   ;-)

We used to run a spring on the front of the driveshaft up inside the crankshaft yoke,  are people still doing that these days?

Whoever the lender is, they are Very generous.

'Lends' tend to make me very careful, with others property - it can be a bit nerve wracking when using them.

Still, it's wonderful when someone comes in to help.

Great thread.

For a guy from the UK , i know of more Sprint Drivers than i do any football players here.

Purest form of racing .

I watch more Sprint and Late Model content across all platforms than i do MX.

I used to work for Ilmor doing all the Honda Indy engines here , on the manufacturing and quality side, and we also did some for Penske Nascar when they ran Dodge.

That rod left the chat in the friendliest way ever.

Can you imagine Chase Sexton trying to set up a Sprint Car LOL.

We have F1 Stock Cars here, which are more like Modified, but its Full Contact, they all run big V8's mainly on 1/4miles shale or tarmac ovals, i always said i would have one when i stopped MX, but i never stopped.

Cool New Sport Thread!  Love reading about the inner workings of these things.  The amount of correction changes on the wheel you guys do each and every lap is amazing.

Took my Wife on a "date night" to Placerville (CA) Speedway this last weekend.  Great show, we both loved it.  Good mix of classes too, (24) 360 Winged Sprinters, (16) Wingless, Super Stocks, and Compact pickups.  All classes were bringing it on the 1/4 Circle track.  As I said, Great Show and for a $20 ticket the bang for the buck meter was pegged!

ps. they had some left over shirts, so parted with $15 and added to my motorsport T’s I already have.  👍

Im sure you guys know what you are doing on the reason for the spring,  but Im gonna throw this out there just in case since you said ya'll are new to this flavor of racing.

When you get your new driveshaft,  make double sure you have enough clearance on driveshaft length for that spring at the short point of the travel radius.  (I think its an inch clearance)  I always blocked the rear with 6" blocks when putting in a new rear (without the torque tube on) to make sure the driveline was at its shortest point of the radius and and take a tape measure and get the exact the shaft distance. (I always ended up having to trim it)    I have a friend who forgot to allow for the collapsed spring distance and it wrecked the Winters due to driveshaft bind.

Im sure you guys know all that already, but just in case.  👍

I didn’t know that, the spare I have has been shaved short so that makes sense, what else you got on tips?

Not that I'm aware of... while they aren't illegal, Mark Hall ran a straigh 6 in 360's back in the 90's in Northern California. The limiting factor is engine size. Though I've never seen a 410 V10 🤔 hmmm.

Now the 4cyl Offy's, while not popular, were used in the distant past. AJ Foyt running one and being a vocal proponent of the engine.

Ive never heard of one in a sprinter.

in my area in the late 70s and early 80s (Big H Speedway) there were straight 6s in skinny cars and modifieds.  Back then most everyone was using Gremlin and Vega skins.  If it had a 6, it usually had an Offenhauser aluminum intake and 2 barrel.   The limited modified we had in '81 was Vega skins,  center steer with bicycle sprockets/chains to create the quick steer and relocate to center.  We also had two radiators, one behind the driver,  and many guys in the class had Chrysler front clips so they could have torsion bar front end.  Out back most alwayts was a one ton truck axle and steel wheels with gussets welded in.  Some guys had a wide-5 up front,  most had 5 on 5.
