A friend of mine sent a cylinder out to be repaired/replated. It came back and still had a crack in it, so he sent it back and they put jb weld over it. He called them and they insisted that is was tig welded, not jb weld. Thoughts?
The ports not being chamfered is pretty bad too

That's ugly
It’s probably Belzona of some type or similar. I doubt a plating company uses JB Weld. Plating companies and other industries use Belzona for lots of repairs and it works. Wouldn’t have thought it to be used in that manor. Seen a lot of pump housings and etc stuck back together with Belzona. Never see a cylinder.
Just when you think you've seen everything.......... That's nuts!
Did they put it in the ports, too?
Please, tell me who did this, so I never get near them.
Luckily they only put it on the repair. He also said the top side of the bore has a bigger ID than the bottom, not sure how far off it is. I feel bad for him because I recommended that he send it to them. They are sticking to their guns saying that it’s tig welded, they assume he doesn’t know the difference between tig and jb weld and couldn’t be more wrong.
the company is Powerseal, who up until now I always recommended people use. I’d much rather go through millennium again, the only mess up they have done for me was send me a single ring piston instead of a dual. And they gave me a $100 credit for that

WTF! I have used them a lot and recommended them a lot more. They always did such good work. This sucks.
Well, one way to tell for sure is to grind a little and see what it is.
He’s 100% sure it is, but I’ll tell him to check it out anyways
Cast aluminum, welded aluminum, and nikasil “overspray” can all be different colors.
Where exactly is the JB Weld?
You see that little hole in the last pic? He put that there with a small pick, that’s not happening to any tig weld I’ve seen.
Dear God…
I know the pinholes happen sometimes, but holy shit at these ports.
they also told him that the cylinder will 100% not fail, but if it did, it would be wrong doing on his end. This gets worse and worse
So what is the path forward here? Very curious.
As far as I know he’s going to buy a new cylinder at some point. He won’t put that cylinder on his sons bike.
That sucks. Last year when I sent my cylinder to Millenium I heard 10 different horror stories about them, Powerseal, and US chrome. I went with Millenium and the turn around was a couple days longer than quoted, but it came back cleaner and more professional looking than my brand new OEM cylinder from KTM.
Ive had good luck with them and they had great customer service.
update from Powerseal. My friend filed a charge back on his card and Powerseal contacted him and gave him a full refund when all was said and done. I told him to send it to millennium this time
Disappointing , I have had Powerseal do several cylinders for me over the years.with no issues.. maybe new owners? I have read pinholes or porosity in the cylinder walls can actually be good for lubrication purposes but the weld or non weld repair is not acceptable… at least you were refunded your $…
Powerseal currently has a cylinder for my 2001 KX125. They did a great job the first time it was replated, i had some gnarly detonation damage recently so I sent it back to them for detonation repair, which required a replate, and they heli coiled 4 of the 5 studs for the head. Hoping it comes back better than this one, I’ll keep you all updated in a couple of weeks.
QC is a lost art. I just spent $65 million adding 4 MW of capacity to my datacenter, and I had so many QC issues across damn near every system we installed. Only the Mitsubishi UPS systems were problem-free, and their techs were very good.
Since COVID people don't seem to give a shit about what they produce. Our education system is failing to generate the skills we need to build and repair technical systems, and our society is producing kids that DGAF about anything but social media likes. Yes, I sound like a grumpy old man. I am one.
I've got 3 cylinders that will need love over the winter. They will go to Millenium. I've used most of the big players more than once, but I'm sure as hell gonna inspect them closely when I get them back. That Powerseal work is garbage.
Pit Row
I hate to sound old/grumpy as well but this is very accurate. God forbid you have an open position for something like a machinist or machine operator. We get like 5-8 resumes max and 1 is worth interviewing for the position. QC has easily gone downhill overall...
On topic, I also have used Millennium several times in the last 10 years and they have been reputable!
I am local to powerseal and went to drop off a cylinder recently. After the attitude I encountered while I was there I choose to pay the shipping to millennium. Couldn't be happier.
Absolutely the opposite of my experience with Powerseal.
They've plated different three cylinders, on three separate occasions and one required welding in the powervalve area.
Flawless work and customer service was as good as I've received anywhere.
Both the woman who answers the phone and the main man spent all the time on the phone with me that I needed.
All in 2023.
Seems to be the same over here, super weird how that COVID shitshow has made every other person just say 'meh'... I just got charged for a load of cylinder head work and half of what they charged for clearly hasn't been done, I can see it visually before even measuring or checking.
Not gonna name names on that one and it's in the UK anyway.
