How long until we see a production 250F with an external electric waterpump?

With more and more 250 race teams moving to electric waterpumps, who do you think will be the first OEM to adpot the idea to their prodution bike? And how far off do we think this could be? At what point does the slight performance benefit begin to make $ense to an OEM for their 250F? I'm sure money, complexity, reliabilty and packaging all play a part in it.

Yeah, why not add a cheap electrical component made in China that when it fails, toasts the motor.

Think of all the money dealers will make doing complete rebuilds due to a $5 pump failing instead of sticking with the existing mechanical pump.

Some times existing designs that have worked pretty well for 40 years don't need to be changed.

And besides when WW3 breaks out and emp are common place, what will we use to battle the zombie hordes that follow if all our water pumps are fried?

You keep on running my friends. I will be deciding which survival tool to use that day, my old klr 650, '94 yz250, or '91 xr 200 with those mechanical water pumps, (or air cooling) and trusty carbs.

How many water pumps failed on Toyota Prius? Uses same pump.

I hear those pumps require a really stout battery

The pump won't fail but it doesn't take much for the plug to get dirty or a rock or a stick to hit the wiring or pump. Not sure how much horsepower you lose from a mechanical one but can't be much.

You could address the overheating issue by having a temperature gauge or light on the handlebars.

Raise your hand if you address other forms of parasitic loss on your bike, like polished transmissions or ceramic bearings.. Half of you probably have a rusty kinked up chain. An electric waterpump is hardly beneficial to 99% of us.

When? Who knows, but the first production bike will probably be a KTM just like the hydro clutch, electric start, two stroke EFI etc. The japanese brands are to conservative to jump the gun now days.

Thinking more about this.. it may not be bad for dirtbikes to start being offered in 2-3 trim levels like vehicles. Alot of us want a barebones bike with a cable clutch, normal water pump... simple. Each brand can offer a base, an "XL" and a works edition to showcase their best work.

does it make sense to radically redesign racing technology that, if the ball keeps bouncing the way it is, will either be illegal or taxed out of existence in 10 or 15 years.

read the interview carefully explaining why they are allowing ev mx bikes in the british series. the tree huggers are going to make it about impossible to race an ice off road bike.

most oems are going to simply refine existing technology and throw new graphics on them.

why not? it will help them save on R & D and instead focus on selling their brand in 3rd world countries where very few customers worry about losing .0003 hp due the drag of a mechanical water pump.

water cooling in those markets still consists of crossing a river and hoping you come out with the same amount of family/livestock..

I would think it would only make sense if the alternator's not charging the battery, otherwise you're just moving the parasitic losses from the pump to the alternator. That would mean you would have to charge the battery after every ride

I wish Honda just kept making the 96 CR250 or Kawasaki a mid 90s KX.  Yamaha did that with the YZ for years but we saw…..people started bitching about it not being updated.  Look at people with the RMZ “oldtechnology”.  People like us won’t buy that bike every year like the people who dream the new technology will get them 5 seconds a lap.  Saw a UK pro test a 2022 YZ 250 against his 1996 YZ and he was a second faster on his 96.  Of course he has it dialed for him but……it’s stil 26 years behind in technology.   More like 26 years behind in marketing.

Have an over heat cut out -  Pump fail - Motor shuts down - Fix pump carry on -  Simple

Awesome!

Having a bike shut off based on a sensor and an ecm, what could possibly go wrong with that scenario?

Go ahead and call me Og, boomer, or whatever nickname you think is an insult but as somebody that seems to constantly be dealing with sensors on stupid Def systems and new equipment that doesn't want to start or has flashing lights on the dash for some stupid reason that not even a shop manual can explain, I am sick of over engineering stupidity and unnecessary complexity.

Mounted high, with reduced positive head to it's inlet suggests the electric pump is an auxillary pump. There may we'll be a standard pump in the normal place.

Less torque in that engine

It would add a lot of weight except in the instance of a KTM that already has EFI and electric start

I like your post, and agree 99%, but question one thing...

How would your trusty YZ's CDI and stator like any significant local EMP? Wouldn't anything powerful enough to be a worry wipe your carb-fed bike's ability to spark, too?

I'd think it might, but it is not quite my usual field (no magnetic pun intended), interested if anyone has an answer before the hordes amass and we need to fight back... Thinking about it now, I'm not sure there would be any lasting affects, or perhaps any unless the blast was very close? Even on an EFI bike.

There are things used on race team bikes where money is no object and longevity doesn’t need to exceed a few races (since they’ll switch it out every race).  There is zero need for this on a stock bike.  It would only be another marketing tool in the cesspool of marketing gimmicks that now dictates that the RM is a pile of shit simply because the latest fad hasn’t been added.  The race to $20,000 bikes does not need any help along the way.
