He had to do it and I applaud him for his efforts. Motocross is a sport played by the toughest people on Earth.

While his determination an effort is valiant, 28th fastest in practice should have been enough to make a better decision. The lap times don't lie.

the unfortunate thing about this situation is with this decision he likely won't be healthy/healed enough to run the MXoN in Sept.

Had he waited, I think he could have been up to speed and a good pick for the team.

Live and learn.

He still has to be one tough SOB!!!! I am a fan Now!!! Not that that counts for anything!

I agree, someone should have stepped in at that point

MXoN is not a priorty for these guys. He did what he and his team thought they should have done.

No lesson to be learned here. Things just didn't work out like he and his team had hoped.

I agree, he should of pulled out after practice and been glad he wasn't hurt worse by that point.

Lesson learned. I just didn't see a scenario where it could of worked out. 28th in practice should of told the story. Maybe Suzuki figures he won't be in their semi next year anyway.

That said, the guy is one tough hombre no doubt.

......unless, he had more speed than he showed in practice. He could have been saving himself for the motos.

Who knows? But, I really like his effort. On the other hand, remember when Bubba pulled out of the series because of his knee (WHILE LEADING IN POINTS) and then didn't even get it fixed? I still think Bubba could have ridden at 75% and won the title that year.

it is important to Mike. He's everything MX and going to the MXoN is still important to a guy like that.

But, the lesson would have been to quit after practice when the lap times were pretty apparent it wasn't going to work out. Yeah, he might have tooled around for a point or two, but I don't think anyone in their right mind would think he was going to get a top 10 with a practice like that.

So, yes, there is definitely a lesson to be learned IMO.

It was pretty obvious in practice footage they showed, he was favoring his leg. My wife, noticed right off the bat, so like I said, pretty obvious and looked painful!

Yup, that's the lesson. Quit after practice and focus on the MXoN. Being selected and getting to go over there would have made up for some of missing the MX title, but I guess he could still be ready in time.

I'm just wondering what doctor in their right mind would have cleared Mike to race in an AMA motocross ... with a busted kneecap.

Another question is -
Even without seeing his practice performance, what other factory team would try to field a rider with that type of injury?

Maybe they should have taken the wheels off of his bike in the pits to prevent him from racing.. Or maybe that was his old team that would do that..

I am without a doubt that his surgeon DID NOT clear him to ride. What Mike did was ill advised. It didn't prove he is tough it proved he is stupid. The only thing I think that was dumber than riding was his "performance" during the TV interview.

Alessi has at least 5 more shots at getting a title before his career is over. DeCoster has eluded to having a MX only and a SX only guy in the truck next year due to budget cuts.

I didn't want to call it out, but that bit after the interview was a little overly dramatic IMO.

txmxer, overly dramatic? When was the last time you broke a patella in 3 places? Heck, Im no BobbyM but give MA a break... it wasnt like he limped off and it was ok, he obviously messed it up worse than it was, hence the 2nd surgery! Id like to see your face after that injury... then re-injury. Well, after second thought maybe I wouldnt!

Damn. Poor kid. Someone in his surroundings deserves a beating for letting him do this. There was no way on earth he would succeed with that knee.

Sure kid has hearth, but we already knew this didn't we? So what was the fucking point with this brain dead maneuver again?

Heal up good kid, see you when you are ready. Spend some time with that pretty GF and enjoy life some.

better double check your burger for some secret sauce Wink

Did you watch the interview. I'm sorry but that was drama added to the pain.

As far as pain goes. I have no idea what he felt like, but I've walked away from a variety of things that hurt a lot. Dislocated femur scared the sh1t outta me.

This one time...I ripped my whole head clean off. Picked it up. Dusted it off and finished practice.

The Internet Bad Ass has this one figured out -
After the get off Mikey rode around for another lap and wasn't exactly rolling the jumps.
It wasn't bad enough to bring out the Mule - he rode off under his own power ......

I agree that he knew the camera was still rolling and was being dramatic about it all. He stood on this left leg to kick the bike over, does an interview, then can't keep a straight face for 7 more seconds? Okay.

Man, talk about a screwed position to be in. If he tries it and fails, it's really easy to point fingers...(though I'm not sure (m)any of us would have tried it.

If he doesn't try it, he gets called a puss.

It was pretty easy to see how much pain he was in, even before the race. That was no act.

Don't know if you have ever been injured, but. When I was injured last, I was able to scram to the side of the track faster than shit and drive myself to the ER only to writhe in pain 6 hours later.

Been broken up many times. Left ankle twice, both knees, ribs 3 times, right collar bone once, 5th metacarpal in my right hand once, AC separation in right shoulder, Torn Rotator cuff in right shoulder, separated right shoulder, broken bones in my feet.... thats just off the top of my head.
I know all about holding it in for 7 more seconds before you let it out. Most of those, I had to return to work the next day, some of them, I took one day off.

It's not that big of a deal.

If it was that easy to see how much pain he was in before the race, smarter heads should've prevailed right then.

Who was the physician that allowed him to race in the first place?

Don't care who the doc was; he shouldn't been allowed to race for the safety of his injury and future career.

Yeah, that was insane trying to come back that fast. Took a lot of guts though. Hope he heals up now and comes back strong.
