So, my son and I rebuilt my 1981 YZ125. I’ve road it 5, or 6 times with no issues. My son comes to visit and rides it for his second time, ever, and ends up walking the bike back. He said he hit some big bumps and also ended up with a front flat. It wouldn’t go back into 1st he said. After tearing into the clutch side to look at the shift pawl and shift star, it just doesn’t want to go out of third. I tried by spinning the rear wheel and attempting to shift up and down, with no luck. Did my son bend a shift fork? If so, which one? I hate to split the cases again, but I will if I have to.

Cases are coming apart. Likely a bent shift fork, possibly something else.

Yes, the shift pawl and spring are the first thing I checked. I’m in the middle of the tear down now. I think it’s a shift fork that’s bent. Will know soon. Thanks!
