Hodaka's were a threat, pie plates were actually used as number plates, starts had everyone in neutral with their left hand on their helmet, and if you wanted to run wearing hush puppies, hey, you went for itLaughing

Remeber the Martini Jerseys Roger and Joel rode with? My brother and me took a Husky banner down at Castic and asked Torsten Hallman for an autograph (my dad's idea) and he took it away from us because it cost money. After that we rooted for Roger & CZ's.

59. You remember Bob Hannah’s Open-Bike fan-club at Unadilla.

Anyone have stories of the infamous "Original Open Bikers" and their fearless leader John Honda.

They would stroll around Unadilla with those classic T-shirts with the fuzzy iron-on lettering, still loaded, blood shot eyes, screaming for Hannah & Jo Jo.

Most of the items on the "Old School List" can be found on the riders or the bikes in these old amateur racing photos from the 70's at REEEEEEEEEEED BUUUUUUUD. Rider #7A in the top right is none other than Mark Barnett...

won over $12000 in prize money at the Snake River Canyon mx 1974 and for you
CZ fans- how about Barum tires,Jikov carbs and Pal spark plugs.

Remember the "cross-up" or "clicker"? And jumps didn't have landing ramps.

Spain had three companies making MX bikes. This is me on my OSSA. Note the Ellie Taylor prescription goggles, Iron Jaw face guard bolted to a Bell R/T helmet and no gloves. The round sticker on the number plate is from the GNC race at the Astrodome.

my first race bike was a 1972 yamaha Lt2, not the motocross model but the "enduro" model.. back in those days if you wanted a race bike you laced a 21 up front, put pettys on it, took off all the lights and street legal stuff, put a chamber on it, add knobbys and presto you had an honest to gawd race bike......my gear bag had a buco open face helmet with a foot ball guard bolted on the front (duct tape wrapping it of course), webco gloves,a nylon yamaha jersey, black leather leathers, lineman boots a kidney belt with buckles,(pre goldbelt) and black rubber goggles.. i was so stylish.....my track of choice (because it was closest )was indian dunes, the international track, or once a year hopetown.............. awesome stuff...

Exactly. My first Motocross was in the "Street Class" on a '70 DT-1. Put on a knobby, taped the headlight and won a trophy. Later I stripped the electronics, made a number plate out of flooring tile, added a chamber and entered the racer classes.

My gear bag looked like your's. Lineman's included. Only I had a Bell with the nylon fooball gaurd and I taped a tear off to the bars so I could see through them.

That green yamaha sure brought back memories, that looks like the Lt2 mx, stock with a down pipe.... mine had a bassani up pipe, that bike was my first "real" motorcycle, the year before i got a yellow honda QA 50 for christmas, i can honestly say that seeing "on any sunday" changed my life... it's funny how a movie could change your life but that one did....from that day on i was a moto head and have been ever since.

GREAT LIST!

I still have a sweet pair of Carrera's with "trick" yellow tinted lenses that rocked at Friday Night Dunes races!....And then there is #69.....

* You've worn overalls in practice to keep your gear clean
*You;ve raced in those boot "gaitor" things (JT?) that covered your boots
*You can remember being genuinely "afraid of" disk brakes and water cooled engines because they would be "unreliable"
*You've been stuck in the lower pits at Saddleback Park after a cloudburst/rainstorm because you could'nt make it up that hill (right next to the start straight) to get out after it got slimy
*You raced a Viewfinders GP at Riverside International Raceway
*You still call Racetown 395 "Sunrise"
*Russ Darnell Motocross Schools ("alumni" here)
*You still own one of those orange and blue Scott gear bags
*Turtleneck JT jerseys

Remember seeing "On Any Sunday" in the theater when it came out. Malcolm, back then, was the guy at K&N Cycles in Riverside who built my JT-1, and my cousin Keith Mashburn was the one who went throught the haybales and wall in the first 10 minutes of the movie.

Getting up there. My second set of gloves, my first pair of Toasted Almonds:

I had to try them out to see if they were part of "Bimbo's" secret. The first pair were the type with the thick rubber strips on the back, mentioned previously.

Those were my first pair of gloves-----with black/yellow NorStar leathers and red/white/blue/black NorStart boots. Oh, and a full-face Bell-----just like Kenny Roberts........I was a little confused about the mx/flat-track distinction at that time. Wink

I eventually got the "style" thing figured out when I received my first JT catalogue.
