Review and photos by Andre Barbosa

I'm a firm believer that you can substantially extend the longevity of a four-stroke engine if you feed it a steady diet of clean air, good fuel, and high-quality oil, at regular intervals. As a result, I'm very methodical about always keeping clean and well-oiled filters in my bikes. This task is made much easier if you have a few air filters in rotation, as it's much easier to clean several filters once a month, rather than cleaning a single filter every week. In this case, I decided to add a DT-1 air filter to the rotation for my 2014 KX250F, but I'm no stranger to DT-1 products, since I've been successfully running one of their filters in my 2013 KTM SX-F 350 for the past year.

Product Highlights:

  • Manufactured with high-quality bonded, dual layer foam.
  • World class foam technology delivers maximum airflow, while maintaining critical engine protection.
  • Comes with an exclusive super seal base, which eliminates the need for grease.
  • DT-1 air filters come standard or pre-oiled.
  • Price: $25.95 standard, $27.95 pre-oiled.

First Impressions:

The Dt-1 has a high quality feel to it, as the different foam densities, and the super seal base make for a very good first impression. Installation however was slightly more difficult than with the stock filter, mainly because of the thicker foam and the super seal base. The combination of those two make for a puzzling task when trying to connect the bolt to the threads inside the airbox. However, after installing the DT-1 filter a few times, I became used to applying additional pressure to the bolt, and it stopped being an issue.

At the Track:

I wish I could say I noticed a performance difference between the bike with the stock air filter and the DT-1, but that wasn't the case. If there was a gain, it wasn't significant enough to make a difference for the average rider. However, that was also my experience with all other aftermarket air filters that I've tried. In any case, I believe the number one job of an air filter is keeping dirt out of the intake tract, a test that the DT-1 filter passed with flying colors.

Long-Term Durability:

I'm happy to report that after running the DT-1 air filter on my KX250F for the past four months, it still looks and feels like new. There are no signs of rips or tears on the foam, and the super seal base is still perfect, with the filter still holding its original shape like a champion.

The glue connecting the foam elements has become a little bit stained by the blue air filter oil that I run, but that has no affect on filtering performance. As I mentioned above, I've also been running a DT-1 air filter for the past year on a KTM SX-F 350. That filter is still in great shape, which gives me a good indication that the DT-1 filter for the KX250F will also hold up well past the extended use I've already put it through.

The Last Word:

A well-maintained air filter is a cheap insurance policy for the high-performance engines of modern dirt bikes. The DT-1 air filter does an admirable job keeping dirt away, having top quality materials, and great airbox seal. In addition, this air filter is very durable, while still being attractively priced at $25.95. The only downside I could detect was the heavier than usual pressure that was necessary for the bolt to reach the threads during installation, but that doesn't stop me from considering it one of the best air filters out there.
