Mammoth Motocross: 15 Reasons Why You Should Go

1) Heritage
Don Rake started it all back in 1968...and he's still going strong!
2) Holeshot Pride
On no other track is a holeshot more crucial than Mammoth. A quick uphill into a sweeping left followed by a very long, power-robbing hill into a banked left hand 180. Get the holeshot and you're golden, don't and you'll be eating rocks and roost for the rest of the moto. Timmy Wiegand gave himself some clear sailing.
3) Mike Colbert
Mike has been involved with Mammoth Motocross for years and is one of the friendliest guys you could hope to meet in the pits. When not dealing with the race, Colbert works up at the mountain resort itself.
4) King of the West
This year, the AMA and 2X Promotions introduced the King of the West for the Road to Mammoth qualifiers.
5) Looks Can Be Deceiving
Although Mammoth has dark soil and green trees everywhere, don't be mistaken...it is one tricky circuit. Downhills, S-turns, and braking bumps abound, not to mention rocks, trees, and a whole bunch of frustration!

6) Vacation Time
If you've ever been up to Mammoth Lakes then you know how nice and laid back the town itself is. While people treat the race just like any other, the area is an excellent vacation spot. Spy Optics' Kyle Krause even treats the race like a vacation.
7) The Tree Turn
This is possibly one of the most photographed, infamous, and famous turns in all of motocross. It looks awesome, but hot damn is it tricky! An off-camber, 180-degree turn followed by a hard-packed and rutted little downhill. It has caused more than a few tip overs.
8) Industry Involvement
Mammoth has been a staple on the schedule since it's inception. As the event grows, so does its importance. Industry heavy hitters like Lil' D from FMF Racing (#73) come up to race, have fun, and just like other amateur nationals, keep an eye out for rising talent.
9) Oldies But Goodies
Vet pros like Doug Dubach have been going up to Mammoth for years, and thanks to the schedule that separates vets, minis, and big bikes, everyone gets their days in the sun. Unfortunately, Doug had a really bad crash this year in his final moto that broke all of the ribs on his left side. Feel better Dr. D!
10) Thin Air
Why is the sky so blue? Because there isn't much oxygen (or pollution) at 8,000 feet. If you can finish your motos strong here, you are in really good shape. Andy Bakken (pictured here), led a bunch of laps but the thin air got the best of him every moto. Time to hit the gym Andy!
11) Family & Grit
This event really brings family and friends together. On the left are Junior and Pops (not their real names obviously but that's how everyone knows them), and they are just good people to have at the races. On the right is Ryan Abler. He broke his leg in his first moto, then came out the next day and raced again. That's grit!
12) Picture Perfect
Always wanted that bitchin' shot of yourself railing a berm to hang above your mantel? Mammoth is just about the most picturesque MX track around. Get a buddy to snap off some shots and take home some memories of a track that is only open for 10 days each year. Here, Mike Sleeter surfs a turn in the back section.
13) Bears
Get a top ten and get a bear. Sounds simple right? Not so much. Mammoth is a very unique race and track and it is the rare rider that can do well in their first go around.
14) Podium Bar
Yeah, you read that correctly. Mammoth Motocross is probably one of the only facilities that has a full bar right next to the podium. There's no better way to celebrated winning a coveted bear...unless you didn't win one. Then it's time to drown those sorrows!
15) The Great Outdoors
Nowhere else is that phrase more fitting. Amazing mountains surround the track on all sides. Away from the track there's fishing, hiking, and some epic mountain biking.
