Heading into the Talladega first turn, it was a modified design this year. Rather than the full 180, it went a bit wider and up the hill. Mike Brown (just behind Alessi in the first turn) apparently started near the far outside of the gate, but may have been aided a bit by the path that riders packed on the start straight as they rode back to the gate. Glen Helen has one of the fairest and safest starts on the circuit. Kyle Lewis liked the outside and he would usually pull a good start when he was in his prime.
