Sequence: Moto 1 Start

Coming out of the gate at the start of the first moto, Team USA's Ryan Villopoto got the first gate pick, courtesy of Ricky Carmichael, and he started on the far inside. His bike pulled to the right, and he came into contact with Australia's Andrew McFarlane, who went down hard, along with South African Gareth Swanepoel. The crash knocked McFarlane out of action with a back injury, while Swanepoel remounted and finished 13th. Max Nagl (37) got to the first turn in the lead, but Villopoto led at the exit.
