WMX-GP: Fontanesi second in 2011 FIM series

Yamaha’s Chiara Fontanesi has finished runner-up in the 2011 FIM Women’s
World Championship after sweeping both motos on her YZ250F at Lacapelle
Marival last weekend for the penultimate round of the series.

The Italian took a crucial victory over reigning
number one Steffi Laier and was just nine points away from the German
after the chequered flag fell on the final round of seven. Fontanesi had
her best campaign to-date after finishing in the top three for all
thirteen motos (the second race in Greece was cancelled due to poor
weather). From the thirteen contests she claimed victory in six.

“Today, I had a lot of fun racing with Steffi,” she
said. “I was playing with my bike and I felt comfortable with the track.
Next year I want to make the women´s world championship again and I
hope to be world champion this time round.”

Fontanesi took the title chase to the last round
after a season-long chase with four-times champion Laier and defeated
the German on two occasions (she is pictured here winning in Finland.
